Chargers basketball teams take on No. 1 Mariners in push for PACWEST playoffs

With only three weeks of league competition remaining before the PACWEST Provincial Championships, the Camosun College Chargers basketball teams are buckling down to secure their respective places in the playoffs.

For the Chargers women basketball team who is currently 6-6 and No. 5 in the standings, the next three weeks will be crucial as the squad prepares to take on the conference’s top teams.

"We need to get one more win in the next three weeks to guarantee us a spot in the playoffs, but where we are going to get that win is the tough question we need to answer,” said Chargers Head Coach Brett Westcott. “We have four league games left to play against the top four teams in the conference. We have been competitive with all of them, but in the end we have always managed to mess up at the end of games to lose. If we hope to make the playoffs we need to put together four quarters of quality basketball. Hopefully that goal gets achieved at some point during the next three weeks, but we have only ourselves to blame for being in this uncomfortable position."

The Chargers women could not have a tougher schedule heading into the playoffs and it all begins this Saturday as the team faces off against the No. 1 VIU Mariners in Nanaimo. But while Camosun may look like the underdog in the battle against the 11-1 conference leaders, the competition is not taking any chances.

“Camosun is always tough,” said Mariners Head Coach Bill McWhinnie in an interview with the Nanaimo Daily News. “The standings don’t matter, these games are close. They are very well coached and they play hard.”

Following their match up with VIU, the Chargers are scheduled to face UNBC (#2), followed by Quest (#4) and Capilano (#3).

On the men’s side, the 9-3 Chargers are making steady progress and climbed up one spot in the PACWEST standings to No. 2 this week. And though the team does not have the pressure of taking on the league’s Top 4 in their final games approaching the playoffs, there is still a lot work to be done according to Chargers Head Coach Craig Price.

“Record-wise, we are doing very well,” commented Coach Price. “But there are a number of things we need to do to improve and continue to be successful against the best teams. In general, we need to stop bad habits and show more discipline both offensively and defensively. We also need to be tougher mentally and learn how to put opponents away when the opportunity arises.”

Like their female counterparts, the Chargers men will be taking on the PACWEST’s No. 1 team as they face off against the Mariners in Nanaimo this Saturday. With an 11-1 record and a fourth-place CCAA National ranking, the VIU men will not go down easily. But as the league has seen this year, anything can happen as it did earlier this season when the Douglas College Royals (currently ranked sixth) handed VIU their first and only loss of the season in a contest that went 84-68.

“I think playing at VIU will be very tough for us,” said Coach Price. “Many of the things I have mentioned are going to be put to the test this coming weekend!”

In today’s PACWEST basketball action, the hosting Camosun College Chargers cleaned up the weekend with two more wins, this time over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.

The Chargers women virtually walked away with today’s game defeating the Bearcats by over 50 points. Camosun dominated in every frame beginning with a nine-point lead in the first quarter that grew to 24 pts at the end of the half. Camosun widened the gap further by the close of the third, outscoring their opponents 31-9! The Chargers ended the contest 93-40 and head into their final three weekends of league competition with a record of 6-6. Today’s win against CBC, combined with last night’s 60-48 victory over Douglas College gives the Camosun women their first sweep of the season on home ground.

Second-year wing/point Aija Salvador (Oak Bay) had another outstanding game with 23 points and 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Camosun newcomer Ella Goldschmid made a great appearance with 22 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.

It was a slow start for the Chargers men who began today’s game trailing the Bearcats by one at the end of the first quarter. Camosun began to pull ahead in the second and secured a 45-41 lead thanks to Drake Downer’s three posted in the last 10 seconds of the first half. Camosun poured it on in the third outscoring CBC by 14 points and taking a solid 18 point lead. The Bearcats did not go down easily however and met the Chargers in the triple digits posting 34 points to the home team’s 38 in the final frame. This weekend’s sweep advances the Chargers men to 9-3.

First-year forward Trevor Scheurmann led the Chargers to today’s win with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Second-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl was close behind with 23 points and 7 assists.

The Chargers basketball teams hit the road next Saturday to tip-off against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners. Following this weekend’s bye, the Chargers volleyball teams make a return to PACWEST action with a pair of matches against the Douglas College Royals in New Westminster.

In PACWEST basketball action tonight, the Camosun College Chargers satisfied the home crowd at PISE with a sweep against the visiting Douglas College Royals.

The Chargers women jumped to a 14-point lead at the end of the first half of the game, limiting their opponents to a mere seven points in the first quarter and six in the second. In the third, Camosun outscored Douglas 19 points to eight and despite a surge by the Royals in the fourth in which the visitors posted 27 points versus Camosun’s 14, the Chargers collected the win 60-48. The win advances the Chargers to five wins and six losses.

On the men’s side, it was the battle of the underdogs as the Chargers, who defeated the No. 2 Nationally ranked Capilano University Blues 91-63 just two weeks ago, faced off against the Royals who upset the fourth Nationally ranked VIU Mariners 84-68 in the first half of the season. Tonight’s contest went to a three point game at the end of the second quarter with Camosun trailing 40-37. The Chargers picked up the pace in the third quarter, outscoring the Royals 18-9 to steal the lead 55-49. Camosun maintained their momentum in the final frame to capture their eighth win of the season 84-76 (with 3 losses).

Province’s Super 15 Female Senior’s Class inductee commits to Camosun

Standing at 6’1”and possessing an array of skills both on offense and defense, outside hitter Erika Morris is one of the most sought after recruits in BC. Recently, the 17 year old Prince George native announced that she will attend Camosun and play volleyball for the Chargers following her graduation from PG Secondary this spring.

Having been named to The Province’s Super 15 Female Senior’s Class of 2012, as voted on by the head coaches of BC’s CIS volleyball programs, Erika received offers from several institutions but chose Camosun for its academic programming and the opportunity to play for Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl who she has worked with in the past (initially at a camp in Prince George several years ago and most recently with Team BC and the NTCC program this past summer).

“He’s from Prince George and I worked with him last summer,” said Morris in an interview with the Prince George Citizen. “He’s just a really honest good guy and really organized and a really good coach. I agree with lots of his techniques and philosophies.”

Last summer, Erika served double duty with both the 17U Western Canada Summer Games team winning Gold in Kamloops and the 18U National Team Challenge Cup program winning Gold in Winnipeg with current Camosun Chargers student-athletes Kelsey Clarke and Olivia Redden who both hail from Delta.

"Erika's commitment to the Chargers is another significant step in the growth of our program,” said Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work with Erika over the years … she is a wonderful person and a determined athlete. We look forward to advancing her game with the Camosun program."

The Chargers volleyball teams have a bye this weekend and return to PACWEST action on February 3-4 as they face off against Douglas College in New Westminster.

In PACWEST volleyball action today, the hosting Camosun College Chargers completed their two game weekend series against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats with a pair of losses.

Despite losing the first set 25-15, the Chargers women turned the tables on their opponents in the second winning the set with a convincing 25-15 score of their own. The Bearcats retaliated and walked away with the third set which ended 25-10. The fourth could have gone either way with each team hungry for the win but the contest went to the visitors 26-24 who chalked up their second victory of the weekend.

The Chargers men came out blasting tonight taking the first set 25-21 and setting the home crowd on fire, but the Bearcats responded with a 25-18 win in the second. The last two sets, which eventually went to CBC, were head to head battles and like most of the action played this weekend, were characterized by some of the most exciting volleyball played in the PISE gym; despite the loss suffered by the home team, fans were not disappointed!

Second-year International student-athlete Jon Joerstad (Oslo, Norway) led today’s cause for the Chargers with 15 kills, 2 blocks, 8 digs and an ace. Last night’s leader Andrew Inglis (fourth-year rightside) followed with 14 kills, 2 blocks and 9 digs.

In PACWEST volleyball action this evening, the hosting Camosun College Chargers started their two game weekend series against the CBC Bearcats with a 3-0 loss for the women and an exciting, barn-burning five set victory for the men who defeated the defending National Champions!

Despite a very close first set, Camosun’s women’s squad was unable to get past their opponents tonight and went down in three by the visiting Bearcats who handed the Chargers their ninth loss of the season.

Second-year leftside Elizabeth Davis (Glenlyon) led the home team with 11 kills and 9 digs. Davis currently leads the PACWEST in total offensive stats and is the top kill maker averaging 3.31 per set. She is also in the PACWEST’s Top 15 for aces (10th) and digs (15th).

In contrast, the Chargers men emerged victorious tonight with a huge win against the nation’s defending champs. Camosun dominated in the first two sets, with CBC responding to take the third and fourth. The home team captured the win in the fifth with a see-saw battle that went 28-26 and left both teams exhausted.

Camosun's James Blandford earns PACWEST MBB Athlete of the Week

First year Camosun forward James Blandford executed one of his best PACWEST performances this past weekend and was instrumental in helping the Chargers men’s basketball team sweep their second half season openers in their home gym at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

On Friday night, Camosun toppled the CCAA’s No. 2 ranked team the Capilano University Blues with a huge upset, taking the game 91-63. Blandford posted 20 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist to help his team to victory.

On Saturday night, the Chargers had a slow start in their attack against the Quest University Kermodes but with the Blandford’s work on the boards and in the high post, Camosun was able to make a strong comeback in the final two frames to take the game 68-58. Blandford contributed 15 points, 12 rebounds and 1 assist.

“James is an outstanding student-athlete and leader,” commented Head Coach Craig Price. “Without James we would not made the comeback on Saturday.”

Camosun volleyball teams keen to capitalize on home court advantage

Following their fall-out against the Capilano University Blues inNorth Vancouver last weekend, the Chargers men’s and women’s volleyball teams arehoping that the home court advantage this weekend will help them score somewins as they play host to the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.

While the Christmas break was good for the Camosun men, allowing theathletes to rest and recover from a hard semester of training, last week’smatches against Capilano proved difficult for the team who could not find theirform.

“Unlike CAP, who played a difficult match the previous weekend, westarted the second half with a bye and the road trip to North Vancouver was ourfirst taste of action,” commented Chargers Men’s Volleyball Head Coach CharlesParkinson. “The set scores in each ofthe matches were very close, but helped by a hometown crowd, they were able tobreak through when they needed to. Havingmade a few changes to their roster, Capilano is now a team to be reckoned withand the battle for the play-offs has become infinitely more interesting.”

Camosun captain Garrett Marcellus (fourth-year leftside from OakBay) continued his steady play last week and the team (now with 5 wins and 11losses) will be counting on him to lead the charge against the Bearcats who arethe defending CCAA National Champions. Marcellus’ blocking, passing and transition offense has anchored the teamthis season and provided spark in times of need.

Against CBC's high-flying wing spiker Will Quiring, who leads theleague in offensive stats, the Chargers will be relying on second-yearrightside Jon Joerstad (International student from Oslo, Norway) and fourth-yearrightside Andy Inglis (Red Deer) to slow down the point giant with their sizeand aggressiveness. Also important forthe Chargers this weekend will be Alex Sadowski (Belmont), the team’s 6'7"middle who leads the league in blocking. A first year player, Alex is graduallylearning the subtleties of the middle position and his offense is rapidlyimproving. This will be essential tocounteract the 6"9" Danny Grant from CBC.

“We have the ability to match up well with CBC but in order to besuccessful this weekend we will need to contain Quiring, execute our game playand capitalize on home court advantage,” said Coach Parkinson. 

The Chargerswomen also had a rusty return last weekend against Capilano but anticipate agood pair of matches against the fifth-place Bearcats on home ground.

“AgainstCapilano, we had opportunity to alter the shape and flow of the match on bothdays but we dropped a set 26-28 on Friday and another 23-25 on Saturday,”reported Camosun Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. “One can only suspect that winning those setssignificantly alters the match as your opposition now feels inclined to adjustand change something they do. We need tocapitalize on some of those opportunities and pressure our opponents more.”

Despite thelosses, which give the Chargers women a record of 7-8 (Camosun remains infourth place), the team managed to incorporate a few new tactical approaches totheir game and according to Coach Dahl, it is all just part of the process.

“Some ofthese [approaches] are specific to our athletes and their execution anddecision making abilities while others are more team oriented and systems based,”said Coach Dahl. “It's a work in progress, but there is no better place for therefinement of these skills and methods than under the microscope ofcompetition. A lot about our game isconsistency or lack thereof. We havesome incredible athletes in our program and we trust that they are workingthrough the game so that things are repeatable in a way that we seek. Clearly it takes time and commitment.”

The Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team opened the second half of the PACWEST season with a huge double digit win over the No. 2 nationally ranked Capilano University Blues in Victoria on Friday night.

Led by first-year forward student-athletes Trevor Scheurmann (Winnipeg) and James Blandford (Stelly’s), the Chargers dominated Capilano in all four frames and collected a convincing 91-63 victory against the Blues who were positioned at the top of the PACWEST standings and ranked second in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

“We executed our game plan, attacked them inside and played good perimeter defense,” commented Camosun Head Coach Craig Price. “We were able to control their running game and still attack them back in transition. I think that CAP is trying to find their identity after the break. They did not play their best basketball and will be tough to beat in the future. Jordan Yu does a tremendous job with that team.”

Despite the walloping that Camosun imposed on their higher ranked opponents on Friday, the team’s follow up match on Saturday against the league’s winless Quest University Kermodes was a tight one as the Chargers struggled to get into the game.

“Against Quest, the zone protected the inside better and it took us the entire first half to start attacking,” said Coach Price. “When we became more confident and played with conviction we were considerably better.”

After being down 32-26 at the half, the Chargers made a strong comeback in the final two quarters to capture their second win of the weekend 68-58.

“Welcome to your inexperienced teams and their ups and downs,” noted Coach Price. ”We will definitely have to better this weekend and in the weeks following to stay in contention for playoffs.”

With a 6-2 record, the Chargers move up one spot in the conference standings to No. 3, right behind the Vancouver Island University Mariners (who took the top spot by defeating Capilano on Saturday in Nanaimo) and the No. 2 University of Northern BC Timberwolves. Together, VIU and UNBC have handed the Camosun squad’s only two losses of the season to date.

The Chargers women fell in both games this weekend (76-62 to Capilano and 68-57 to Quest) and remain in sixth spot with 3 wins and 5 losses. The team will undoubtedly be working towards making improvements over the next five weeks as playoffs draw near.

“We had our chances in both games this past weekend, but we have not been able to sustain anything offensively or defensively for any extended time period,” commented Chargers Head Coach Brett Westcott. “Just when we need to get a couple of stops to keep from falling away, we give up a couple of three-point shots or offensive put-backs which just kill our momentum and leave us scrambling again. We are seeing the same story play over repeatedly from game to game and at some point in time the players have to make some adjustments or they are just going to get the same results which will mean we have a short season. “

This weekend, the Chargers basketball teams travel to the Mainland where they face off against the Langara College Falcons (Vancouver) and the Kwantlen Polytechnic Eagles (Surrey).

The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams produced their second split of the weekend today against the Quest University Kermodes from Squamish.

The Chargers women played a decent first quarter with only 3 points separating them from the leaders. In the second quarter, Camosun fell behind scoring only 8 points vs. Quest’s 14. Despite a surge of energy in the second half, the Chargers were unable to close the gap and Quest captured the game 68-57.

The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams returned to the hardwood tonight to kick-off the second half of the PACWEST season against the Capilano University Blues from North Vancouver. While Friday the 13th was an unlucky night for the Chargers women, Camosun’s men’s squad upset the country’s No. 2 team, handing the Blues their second loss of the season.

The Chargers women played a great first half against the defending PACWEST Champion Blues ending the second quarter tied at 31-all. The Blues picked up the pace in the second half, however, outscoring the home team by 14 points (76-52) and providing Camosun with their fourth loss out of seven games played.

The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams will be put to the test this Friday as they kick off the second half of the PACWEST season against the Capilano University Blues.

On the women’s side, the Chargers face the defending PACWEST champions who are currently ranked No. 3 in the league. Sitting in sixth place with a 3-3 record, the home team will have to pull out all the stops to steal a win from the Blues.

"Capilano is the defending champion in our league for a reason,” commented Chargers Head Coach Brett Westcott. “They are deep, athletic and they play hard. They are difficult to prepare to play against because they have so many different weapons which can create problems. They also have perhaps the best individual player in our league in Jenna Ralston who is a matchup nightmare with her size, skills and high basketball IQ. We will have to play well just to be competitive with them."

The Chargers men will also have to bring their best game forward on Friday as they take on the PACWEST’s No. 1 team. Ranked second nationally, the Blues are notorious for overwhelming their opponents with their experience and energy.

“Capilano is an extremely aggressive team,” commented Head Coach Craig Price. “They like to run in transition, penetrate and shoot the three. They also crash the boards very hard. We will have to be gritty and commit to our game plan if we want to win.”

Following Friday night’s match-up, the Chargers will tip-off against the Quest University Kermodes from Squamish on Saturday afternoon. The Quest women are No. 4 in the league with a 4-2 record. The men have yet to win a game after six contests and sit in ninth place.

"Quest is similar to Capilano in a lot of ways,” said Coach Westcott. “They are deep, athletic and shoot the ball extremely well. They have size and the play well together as a group. We will have to defend their perimeter game and try to stop their transition game if we hope to have any type of chance to steal a game from them."

Camosun volleyball team hosts sister college program from Morioka, Japan

While the Camosun Chargers women’s basketball team is busy kicking off its 6^th Annual Christmas Classic Tournament today at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, Camosun’s women’s volleyball team is preparing for the arrival of a delegation of special guests from Victoria’s sister city and Camosun’s sister college, Morioka University in Japan.

Hailing from Iwate Prefecture in Japan, the squad from Morioka is scheduled to arrive in Victoria on December 31 to train with the Chargers throughout the first week of January, following a brief stay in Vancouver.

“Hosting Morioka and training with their athletes is an incredible way to start off the second semester with our young program,” commented Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. “Japan is one of the top volleyball nations in the world and we are looking forward to seeing first hand, through competition and training, a style of play that I anticipate will challenge our athletes to great lengths. This is a part of the process for our athletes as they continue to develop their game. At the half-way mark in our season, we are not yet where we need to be, but we are definitely heading in the right direction.”

Not only will the student-athletes train and compete together, but more importantly, individuals from both delegations will have the opportunity to build upon the growing relationship that exists between the two cities and institutions. While the designation of "sister cities" between Victoria and Morioka was officially established in 1985, Camosun’s men’s and women’s volleyball programs have been involved in exchanges with Morioka University since 2002.

“We feel fortunate that Morioka University and the City of Morioka have a strong history with both Camosun College and the City of Victoria and look forward to the opportunity of hosting our guests,” said Coach Dahl. “We are grateful for the work that our Athletics department and Camosun’s International Education department has done to enrich the post-secondary experience of our students.”

Spectators can catch the action as the Chargers and Morioka compete in an exhibition match on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 5pm at PISE.

Chargers women’s basketball team hosts holiday hardwood events

With College exams almost over, the Camosun Chargers women’s basketball team is gearing up to play host to two exciting events over the holidays.

The team will hit the hardwood at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence on December 28-30 as the program hosts its 6th Annual Christmas Classic Tournament and follow up in the New Year with an exhibition game against Japan’s U18 National Team on January 2.

“We are now the only college women’s basketball tournament between Christmas and New Year’s west of Toronto,” commented Chargers Head Coach Brett Westcott. “We have been able to attract three teams from the BC league and three from out-of-province so everybody will get to play games against different competition as teams look to start the second half of their season.”

Spectators can expect some great hoop action at the tournament where the home team will go up against defending Alberta Provincial Champions Grande Prairie Regional College , Grant MacEwan University (currently ranked second in the country and undefeated so far this season) and Red River College which plays in the competitive Manitoba college league. Defending BC Provincial Champions Capilano University and PACWEST competitors Langara College will complete the BC side of the draw.

Following the tournament, the Chargers will cap off the holidays with an exhibition game against Japan’s National Women’s U18 team on Monday, January 2 at 1pm at PISE. The U18 squad will play UVic Sunday, January 1 at 2pm at McKinnon Gymnasium prior to facing off against Camosun.

“I don’t know much about them, but I expect them to be at the top of their game and they may be the best team we play all season,” said Coach Westcott. “Their roster shows they are bigger than us and I think they will be quick and tremendous perimeter shooters so I just hope we can be competitive.”

Coach Westcott added, “We may be in over our heads with the competition as we will need to work hard just to be close, but those are the types of games we need to make a run at the better teams in our league in the second half of the season. These games are important for our development as a team. We need to make steps in a positive direction with our level of execution and work ethic in order to compete with the teams in our league in the second half of the season. In the first half of our season, we played well at times, but we sabotaged ourselves with too many mistakes at critical times so we need to clean up that part of our performance if we hope to make playoffs again this season.”

Chargers basketball teams overpowered by nationally ranked Mariners

In PACWEST basketball action tonight, the Camosun College Chargers were overpowered by the Nationally ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners and and fell in both games in double digits. The Chargers women are now 3-2 while the men are 4-1 after being handed their first loss of the season.

Despite losing the game by 10 at the buzzer (55-45), the Chargers women did a respectable job of keeping up with the No. 2 Nationally ranked Mariners squad and worked to outscore the M’s if only by one point in the fourth quarter.

A slow first half for the Camosun men gave the Mariners a 17 point lead and contributed largely to the Chargers accumulating their first loss of the season. Camosun came back to play a great third quarter outscoring the Mariners by five but the home team could not hold on to their momentum and fell to the 9th nationally ranked Mariners men 96-80.

Camosun men take No. 1 PACWEST hoops spot

Almost eight years have passed since the Chargers men’s basketball program has been listed as No. 1 in conference standings, but this year’s Camosun squad has made a strong start to the 2011-12 season, earning an undefeated record of 4-0 and the top sport in the PACWEST standings!

At their home and season openers on November 11 and 12, the Chargers defeated Kwantlen University (currently #7 in the PAWEST standings) 97-92, and Langara College (#5) 86-81. Standing in third place at the beginning of Week 2, Camosun picked up two road games, the first against the CBC Bearcats (66-57) who now sit in last place at #9, and the second which resulted in a huge second half come-back win (74-67) over the Douglas College Royals (#6), who one day prior, brought down the No. 4 Nationally ranked Vancouver Island Mariners, 84-68.

The next test for Camosun comes this Saturday as they face Island rivals the VIU Mariners. And despite rumors that the Mariners may not be at the top of their game, Chargers Head Coach Craig Price is far from thinking that his team is favored to win.

“VIU is very good defensively, they’re very organized and disciplined and one of the best teams in the conference,” said Coach Price. “There are guys that have been with the team for a long time and worked really hard to build the program.”

“We are very happy to be undefeated after the first two weekends,” added Coach Price. “But things will only get more difficult from here as we host VIU on Saturday and travel to UNBC the following week. With VIU ranked #9 in the country and UNBC ranked #14 we will have our work cut out for us. We have come from behind in every game we have played. We have not had good starts and our offensive execution has been poor. Fortunately, we have the mentality to grind out games and, so far, wins. We must play with more energy, execute and pay more attention to detail on a consistent basis if we are to continue to win games against top level competition.”

On the women’s side, Head Coach Brett Westcott’s Camosun squad is 3-1 and #3 in the PACWEST standings. With only two more games left before the first half of the season closes, Coach Westcott and his coaching staff hope the team will make some key developments to their game as the New Year approaches.

"We are still struggling with our consistency in games,” commented Coach Westcott. “We have a large number of first-year players and newcomers to our program as we do every year as a two-year college, but we are stagnant in our level of improvement at times. We need to work harder for longer if we hope to see the kind of improvement from week to week we need to compete with the best teams in our league this season. Hopefully we will start to see some of that growth during the next couple of weeks as we play some of the better teams in our league."

Ranked No. 1 in the PACWEST and No. 2 Nationally, there is no doubt that the undefeated Mariners women will be a tough challenge for the Chargers.

"I have said the past two years that VIU has the best starting line-up in our league and now the national rankings back up that statement,” said Coach Westcott. “We will have to play well and hope they stub their toes regarding something in order for us to have a chance. Hopefully we will compete and play hard where we can have a chance to pull off an upset. Otherwise it could be a long night for us."

In PACWEST volleyball action this afternoon, the Camosun College Chargers women ended their double-header weekend against the Douglas College Royals with a five-set win. Despite taking a set off the ninth nationally ranked Royals, the Camosun men suffered yet another loss and went down in four.

The Chargers women hold a record of 7-4, placing them 4th place in the PACWEST standings while the men are now 4-8 and in fifth.

In PACWEST volleyball action this evening, the hosting Camosun College Chargers started their two game weekend series against the Douglas College Royals with a 3-2 win for the women and an extremely tight 3-0 loss for the men. Last weekend, the Royals men upset the defending CCAA National Champion CBC Bearcats in straight sets on Friday and in five on Saturday.

The Chargers women improve their record to 6-4 while the men move to 4-7 in wins and losses. Please note, there is an appeal in progress regarding replaying the CAM vs. CBC match on Nov. 4th.

With only two more weeks of league play remaining on their 2011 Fall schedule, the student-athletes of Camosun College Chargers Men’s and Women’s Volleyball programs have made a strong presence on the PacWest League Leaders list with eight men and six women listed in the Top 15.

Among these athletes are Camosun’s second-year leftside Elizabeth Davis who has held the top spot for kills for three consecutive weeks and first-year middle Alex Sadowski from the men’s team who has been number one in blocks three weeks in row.

A host of other Chargers, including men’s captain Garrett Marcellus whose all-around talent has placed him in the Top 15 of every category on the list (digs, blocks, aces, kills and total offensive stats), can be found on the PACWEST Leader Board.

This past weekend, the Chargers women’s volleyball team took two wins against the College of the Rockies Avalanche, helping the squad maintain fourth place in the PacWest conference standings and a continued spot in the CCAA National rankings for the third consecutive week (currently #14).

The pair of 3-1 wins were led by Chargers second-year leftside Mariah Holmstrom (Campbell River) who had 14 kills on Friday night in only two sets played and by newcomers Olivia Redden (Delta) and Morgan Marshall (Smithers) who produced eight points each on Saturday.

On the men’s side, the parity of the PacWest volleyball league was evident again as the Chargers dropped two matches to COTR (the first in five and the second in four), a team they beat twice in Victoria just two weeks ago.

“The first match was a long battle and could have gone either way, with the 15-13 5th set outcome determined in part by a great performance from COTR, a loud and boisterous home crown and the effects of a two-day bus journey to get to Cranbrook,” said Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “Saturday’s match up was challenging as we struggled to find consistency and the squad paid the price for too many unforced errors.”

Garrett Marcellus and Alex Sadowski were stand-out performers for the Chargers with Marcellus notching 20 kills and 18 digs, and Sadowski contributing 11 kills, a team high 8 blocks and two aces.

Looking to get back into winning territory, the Chargers face a surging Douglas College at home this weekend. Coming off two victories against Columbia Bible College, the Royals are playing with great confidence, led by veteran middle attacker Andy Robson and right side attacker Jeff Taylor (currently number two in kills in the conference).

“The key to success for us will be a focus on first contacts – serving and passing,” commented Coach Parkinson. “With two of our Chargers in the Top 15 in offensive stats, there is no question about fire-power, however, success can be greatly enhanced if the ball is delivered to the setter effectively. This will make it extremely difficult for the Royals blockers, two of whom are also in the Top 15 in total blocks.”

Historically, the Chargers – Royals match up has provided some of the most competitive and entertaining volleyball of the season and this weekend should continue that tradition. Catch the action this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

Chargers men's basketball team kicks off perfect weekend; women split

The Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team kicked off their season openers with a perfect weekend against visitors Kwantlen University Eagles and Langara College Falcons.

On Friday, fourth-year veteran Blake Mansbridge led Camosun to a 97-92 win over Kwantlen with 28 points followed by newcomer Trevor Scherumann (Oak Park, Winnipeg) who posted 23. In his PACWEST debut, first-year forward James Blandford (Stelly’s) scored 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Saturday’s match came down to the wire with the Chargers coming back from a 10 point deficit in the middle of the fourth quarter to win the game 86-81. Second-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) led the Chargers with 20 points while James Blandford came to floor with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Blandford is currently No. 1 in the PACWEST league for rebounds and is tied in second place with teammate Blake Mansbridge for points, each averaging 19.5 per game.

On the women’s side, the Chargers suffered a 74-69 loss to Kwantlen on Friday but picked up their game on Saturday to overpower Langara 63-34.

“We did not play the way we hoped against Kwantlen Friday night,” said Head Coach Brett Westcott. “They are quick, aggressive and hardworking and they jumped on us early, but we dug ourselves out of the early hole and took a lead in the third quarter until three minutes remained only to see us throw things away again. Based upon how the game was played they worked harder than we did and they got the win they deserved and I hope that result does not create problems later in the season when playoffs get closer.”

Coach Westcott added, “We did a better job Saturday against Langara. We had played them during our exhibition pre-season so we knew what to expect. We played well defensively, but offensively we were still stagnant for much of the first half. We just have to get better and continue to do so each week if we want to compete with the better teams in our league.”

First-year wing Caitlin Marshall and wing/point returnee Aija Salvador led both nights. Marshall had a weekend total of 35 points (21 + 14) and Salvador totaled 28 (14 + 14).

Chargers prepare to kick off hoops season

Following a host of pre-season activities and weeks of training, the Camosun College Chargers basketball teams are preparing to kick-off the PacWest season at their home openers this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

In conjunction with starting a new school year in September, the teams held their annual Tip-Off Dinner Fundraiser which raised over $18,000 for student-athlete scholarships. The teams also hosted a set of Alumni games and a free Coaching Clinic, and kicked off their Fall Fundamentals Basketball Academy which runs every Sunday straight through to December. In addition, the squads have been working diligently in the gym with PISE’s Athlete Development Coordinator, Matt Fisher as well as competing in a number of exhibition games and tournaments both home and away in preparation for the PacWest season.

“The league is looking very strong,” said Chargers Men’s Basketball Head Coach Craig Price. “There seems to be a slight shift towards the lower mainland and more parody within the league. I believe we are capable of competing with anyone but we’ll need to out-work most teams and be more disciplined than we have shown to date.”

Key players for the Chargers men’s squad will be a mix of newcomers and a small core of returnees. Beginning his first season with Camosun is 6’6” forward James Blanford, a local Stelly's product who came to Victoria from England. Blanford is described as an extreme athlete who is expected to do some special things for the program. Following a hiatus recovering major reconstructive leg surgery, former UVic student Trevor Scheurmann from Winnipeg also joins the Chargers. The 6’6” forward is another of Coach Price’s special recruits possessing a very high basketball IQ. Wing man Paulius Makulavicius from Kitsilano will most certainly be seeing some court time in his rookie year as a very versatile scorer and playmaker, as will Oak Bay grad Drake Downer who is a hyper-competitive player with deep range.

These athletes join a small core of returning players including fourth-year guard from Nanaimo Blake Mansbridge who last year earned a BCCAA All-Star, CCAA Academic All-Canadian and National Scholar Athlete, second-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (two-time “AAA” All-Star, BC Summer Games and U16 Provincial Team player) and second-year point guard Brandon Chan whose speed and tenacity is equaled by none.

On the women’s side, Camosun’s veteran experience will come from third-year wing/point Anya Weare from Salmon Arm. Transfers Caitlin Marshall (wing) who played three years at the University of Guelph and Alex Allen (point/wing) who comes to Camosun following two years at Thompson Rivers University will also top the veteran’s list. The Chargers are hopeful that second-year wing/point Aija Salvador (Oak Bay) who was voted last year’s BCCAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year, will soon overcome her pre-season injuries to play at the level she is capable of.

In a league that will be dominated by teams with experience, Camosun is faced with the reality that it will have its hands full keeping up with the pack.

“Vancouver Island University and the University of Northern BC have rosters filled with third, fourth and fifth-year players and are expected to start the season well ahead,” said Chargers Women’s Head Coach Brett Westcott. “Capilano University is another team with a large number of experienced players returning to their roster and expected to do well as the defending Provincial Champions.”

Coach Westcott added, “We have struggled at times with our youth and a lack of attention to detail, but we are getting better. Whether it is good enough to compete with the best teams in the league will be determined over the next few weeks.”

Chargers' first road games put teams to the test

In PACWEST volleyball action this past weekend, the Chargers travelled to Abbotsford to take on the CBC Bearcats in their first road games of the season. While the trip produced only one win, it served as a good learning experience for the teams which have another 10 weeks of league action ahead of them.

The Chargers women split their two weekend matches against CBC falling to a 3-1 defeat on Friday (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19) and turning around to win in four on Saturday (25-13, 25-23, 15-25, 25-22).

"Our game is about growth and adjustment," commented Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. "On Friday night, CBC's April Van Wieren proved to be a handful for us. Moving from Friday to Saturday we wanted to do a better job of controlling her impact on the match. To do this we focused on what we needed to do before she had a chance to become part of their offense as opposed to reacting to her play. We had to serve well and challenge our opposition on every return of the ball. The athletes responded very well on Saturday serving fourteen aces as a team, led by first year setter Kelsey Clarke with four."

Coach Dahl added, "As a coach, I enjoy the doubleheader weekend format. If I felt that our program underperformed or fell short of expectation on the first night, we have the opportunity to adjust a number of things from game plan to our line-up. Conversely, if you succeed in accomplishing your goals for the match on Friday, your challenge is to maintain that level of performance and anticipate/prepare for your opponent's adjustments to the best of your ability. The same applies to our athletes. I take a lot of positives from our response on the second day versus CBC."

On the men’s side, going up against the defending National Champion Bearcats proved to be a good test for the Chargers who went down 3-0 on Friday (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) and 3-1 (12-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday.

"It was a see-saw battle in each of the sets with both teams trading big hits and even bigger blocks," said Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson. "In the end though, it was the play of CBC after 20 points that allowed them to push forward for the win. We looked solid for most of the match but in each of the sets allowed a three or four point CBC run in a single rotation, which meant we were always playing from behind. Despite furious rallies to catch up, this was all the margin the Bearcats needed."

On Saturday, the Chargers showed just how good they can be, taking the first set 25-13 with the strength of excellent serving, disciplined blocking and very aggressive transition play. Play cooled off in the second set and to the credit of CBC they hung on and again showed their experience with rock solid play from 20-25 points in each of the next three sets to take the match in four.

Up next, the Chargers travel to Cranbrook to take on the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

"The matches this past weekend highlighted how competitive the league is this season and how just a simple mistake or two here and there can change the outcome of sets and matches," said Coach Parkinson. "Going into the battle against College of the Rockies this weekend, this time in their home gym, the Chargers have to minimize the effects of the long road trip to Cranbrook, return to a solid passing game and neutralize the play of 7’0” COTR middle attacker Taylor Verboom. In addition, injured COTR setter Linford Bennett from Melbourne Australia will return to action following an ankle sprain and should run a much more unpredictable offense."

Chargers women volleyball return to National rankings

The CCAA National Rankings have been released, and after a lengthy absence from the polls, the Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team has found their way back into the top 15! In the first release of rankings for the 2011-2012 season, the Chargers are ranked 13th in Canada.

The news is significant to a program that has been virtually absent from the CCAA standings for over eight years. In February 2003, the Chargers rose to an all-time high fifth-place National ranking under International Coach and veteran member of the St. Lucia National Team, Dionne Didier.

While the news is a nice recognition, current Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl hopes it will help provide those who are watching with a better picture of how the team is performing overall.

“Being in the National rankings says two things,” said the second-year Camosun Coach. “First, it's a coach's poll and we are recognized by our peers. Second, it says a lot about the calibre of play in the PacWest. Coming off of two consecutive weekends of loss, we feel that our current record doesn't accurately reflect the direction of the program. Our losses have come at the hands of the first and fourth ranked teams in Canada and our play fell short of what we expect from ourselves. Having our name amongst the nation’s best is where we expect this program to be from October through to March and the National Championships.”

The Chargers travel to Abbotsford this weekend to take on the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.

Camosun’s Garrett Marcellus earns PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Congratulations are in order today to fourth-year Camosun student-athlete and Chargers team captain Garrett Marcellus who was named the PacWest Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week.

Garrett had one of his best all around performances this past weekend and was instrumental in the Chargers’ two wins over the visiting Capilano University Blues.

Playing on the left side on Friday, Garrett registered 10 kills and 3 block points as well as 8 digs, many at key times in the sets. He was also one of the anchors of the passing rotations, delivering consistently perfect receptions to his setter.

Showing his tremendous versatility he moved to the middle on Saturday and continued his winning ways with 8 kills, 5 blocks, 1 ace and 3 digs. Scoring 27 points in the two matches in two different positions is something that very few players at the collegiate level have the ability do.

Garrett used his athleticism, skill, experience and leadership to power the Chargers to victory. Heading into Week 4 of league competition, the Chargers are ranked #3 in the PacWest and 13th in the nation.

This weekend, the Chargers take their first road trip of the season to Abbotsford to challenge the reigning National Champions, Columbia Bible College.

Chargers volleyball teams hit the road

Following three exciting weeks of playing host to their PacWest competitors, the Camosun College Chargers volleyball teams are set to hit the road as they take on the Columbia Bible Bearcats this weekend in Abbotsford.

The Chargers opened their PacWest season three weeks ago with a perfect weekend against the College of the Rockies while being cheered on by a large and uproarious crowd of fans led by Camosun’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Education students. The following weekend drew even larger and louder crowds as the Chargers played host to Island rivals, the VIU Mariners who stole all four matches against the home team. Last weekend, the Chargers moved the show from their home gym at PISE to St. Michaels University. The women dropped both their matches while the men chalked up another two against the visiting Capilano University Blues.

With this weekend’s pair of wins, the Chargers men are ranked third in the league with a record of four wins and two losses.

“Last weekend was a good one for the Chargers,” commented Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “We felt we were a more powerful team than Capilano but as they showed us in the pre-season, they are scrappy and never give up. Our goal was to challenge Cap with first contact balls. This meant putting them in trouble with strong serving when we have the ball and with good passing from our serve receivers when they were serving. Fortunately, our game plan worked to a tee and the outcome of each of the sets on Friday night’s 3-0 win was never in doubt. On Saturday, Cap started with a fury … their first set rollover was a wake-up call for us and that was enough to motivate us to return the favor over the next three sets. Recording a record 27 blocks in four sets, the size difference at the net made a huge difference and the balls that did get by the block were pursued with the best defensive intensity of the year. Winning at home will be extremely important this season and we have done a good job against our visitors so far.”

Despite producing losses over the past two weekends, the women are keeping focused and are preparing for the weekend ahead.

“We must remind ourselves that there is progress being made on many fronts,” said Head Coach Chris Dahl. “Our athletes are working hard in all areas and as they continue to do this they will hit their mark. While our performance this past weekend left much to be desired, we continue to gather a lot of information on ourselves as a team and as individuals in competition. After reviewing game-tape from this past weekend, even amidst the struggles, there are signals that we are doing the right things. We have second year athletes that struggled to put the ball away last year and now, there are times when the ball is exploding off defenders. At this early part of the season athletes need to take those smaller moments as positive signs. We will definitely piece it all together as the season progresses.”

With two wins and four losses, the Chargers stand fourth overall in the PacWest rankings – one spot ahead of their upcoming competitors, the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.

“Heading into week four versus CBC we face a program not all that different from ourselves,” commented Coach Dahl. “CBC is under the guidance of a new coach and from the video I've seen I must admit that I like what they're doing. It should be a very competitive weekend.”

On the men’s side, the Chargers will be put to the test as they go up against the defending CCAA National Champion Bearcats who will be led by their talented outside hitter and last year’s National Championship MVP, Will Quiring.

“As one of the biggest teams in the league, our goal will be to limit CBC’s outside attack with our block, thereby putting increased pressure on their role players to step into unfamiliar territory as scorers, something that we think they will have trouble doing,” stated Coach Parkinson. “CBC will provide us with a good opportunity to gauge our progress as they have started the season well. With so much parity in the league this year, every team has to bring their best performance on every night and we look to take our best game on the road and steal two victories.”

The Camosun College Chargers lit up the gym at St. Michaels University for the second time this weekend with some hard hitting volleyball action against opponents, the Capilano University Blues.

It seemed as though the Chargers women could not find their groove against the Blues this weekend, losing both contests 3-0. Today's match went 25-12, 25-20, 25-19.

Despite not having the home court advantage, the Camosun men cruised to another win over Capilano, this time taking it four sets (13-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-15).

The Chargers volleyball teams take their game on the road next weekend as they go up against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats in Abbotsford on Nov. 4 & 5.

Camosun netters prepare to bounce back

Following the loss of last weekend’s double-header Island rivalry matches to the VIU Mariners, the Camosun College Chargers volleyball teams are preparing to bounce back to their winning ways as they face off against another PACWEST rival, the Capilano University Blues, this weekend at St. Michaels University School.
On Friday, the Chargers men fell to the Mariners in a thrilling two hour contest that had both teams on the edge of victory. The five-set match went 25-15, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13.

“Losing 15-13 in a fifth set is always disappointing but a single bounce here or one break there could have changed the outcome,” said Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson.

While either team could have won Friday’s match, the game on Saturday was a different story. In spite of some good combinations, the squad showed a lot of ragged play going down in three straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-23).

“We played like an October team while our opponents showed mid or even late season form,” commented Coach Parkinson. “We lacked discipline and our blocks were not very well formed. VIU’s defense was very good and their serving was hard and strategic which took us out of our game. While we battled hard, they earned their victory.”

While superior in size over this weekend’s opponents, the Chargers men are preparing for another slugfest as they face off against a vastly upgraded Capilano Blues squad. In their first match of the season, the Blues went the distance with the defending National Champions, the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, losing in the fifth set.

“They are a smaller team overall and rely on fast sets to the outside to beat the block and a lot of action from the right side, both front and back row,” stated Coach Parkinson. “We will have to have a solid block that forms very quickly to contain CAP’s attackers, as well as a determined transition game where our attackers counter-attack effectively and with power. Taking the energy out of a smaller team early with tough serving and a few great plays will be one of the keys to our success. If we can create an environment where our superior size is coupled with a psychological advantage, we will be fine but make no mistake – we anticipate that this is going to be a battle.”

The Chargers women also conceded to the Mariners on the weekend going to four sets (26-24, 25-20, 16-25, 25-18) against last year’s CCAA Silver Medalists on Friday and then falling in three (25-15, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday.

Despite the loss, second-year, leftside Elizabeth Davis (Glenylyon Norfolk) capped off a very consistent and productive week of training and led the Chargers over the weekend with a total of 21 kills, 5 aces, 20 digs and 4 blocks.

“We put a lot of responsibility on our athletes in training,” said Coach Dahl. “This is the time of year to find out about every small detail as it relates to our performance on the court. Elizabeth has consistently produced points for us offensively so it was great to see her add numbers to the blocking and service ace columns. This is part of being a six rotation player, something our league thrives on.”

The second-year Camosun coach added, “We like our progress and the home crowds at PISE this past weekend were fantastic! I hope the crowds continue to grow as our game grows. We have a heavy home schedule in the first semester and come January we are on the road a lot so it's great to see a lot of bodies in the crowd in support of the Chargers.”

While both Chargers teams fought hard tonight in front of a packed home crowd, match-up no. 2 of this weekend's double header Island rivalry series did not produce a win for either team and the Mariners went away with all four weekend games.

Last year’s CCAA National Women's Volleyball Silver Medalists went 3-1 with the Chargers tonight while the Mariner men downed the home team in three straight sets.

Chargers finish fourth at golf nationals

The Camosun College Chargers golf team finished just outside the medals today following the final round of play at the PING CCAA National Golf Championships. It was a heartbreaker for the team from Victoria which was tied for second place after the first round.

“It was a disappointing day,” commented Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “But the guys tried their best and they conducted themselves like gentlemen. I’m proud of them. They were great reps for Camosun!”

Humber College emerged as the 2011 PING CCAA Champions with a two-day team total of 587. In second place was the host team, Holland College who shot 609. Camosun and the University of the Fraser Valley tied for third with 613 with Camosun losing the tiebreaker to end in fourth.

Adrian Cord from Humber pinned the low individual score with 140 (68 + 72). The top golfer for Camosun was fifth-year veteran Kevin Walz from Qualicum Beach who finished sixth overall with a total of 150 (75 + 75). Victoria natives Jared Hundza (Pacific Christian) and Phil Kondrak (St. Andrews) each shot 156 while Jordan Krulicki from Red Deer shot one stroke over with 157.

Top ranked Chargers prepare for hard-hitting action with Island rival Mariners

Riding on the momentum of last week’s double header straight set wins against the College of the Rockies, the Camosun College Chargers men’s and women’s volleyball teams are in the gym preparing for some hard-hitting action against Island rivals, the VIU Mariners.

In last week’s home openers, the Chargers men played fearlessly against COTR taking the opportunity to finish off each set when given the chance and winning both matches 3-0. The Chargers also took full advantage of their height with great play at the net averaging almost four block points per set.

“We were pleased to win our matches against Colleges of the Rockies,” said Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “All the athletes had a chance to see some action and we remained steady throughout both contests. Our ability to get into the heads of opposing attackers with big, disciplined blocks will prove to be an advantage going into the latter stages of the season and it was important for us to establish our blocking prowess early.”

This weekend, Coach Parkinson and his crew will face a tougher challenge going up against their longstanding Island rivals.

“VIU may not be as physical a team as us this season but they make up for any disadvantage they might have with experience and determination,” stated Coach Parkinson. “Their wing players Nigel Proch and Milo Warren are fifth and fourth year players who anchor their attack and they are also steady out of the middle. We scrimmaged once against VIU earlier this season and each set was extremely close, so we are really looking forward to great attacks, straight down blocks and unbelievable digs during this weekend's contests.”

The Chargers women will also face a tough challenge against the Mariners who were last year’s CCAA National silver medalists. At the helm of one of the youngest teams in the PacWest, Camosun Head Coach Chris Dahl firmly believes that his squad’s advantage is its ability to improve at a greater rate than its opposition.

“Looking closely at the numbers from the matches on the weekend, we did a very good job of generating points,” commented Coach Dahl. “This was likely our saving grace as we also created a disproportionate amount of negative points in our two matches but we were also able to monitor our athlete's abilities to adjust through match play and between matches. Over the course of the season, we will be committed to making adjustments like this from one match to the next.”

While much has yet to be proven, evidence of Coach Dahl’s strategy is coming to fruition with players like Chargers second-year rightside Hilary Graham from Courtenay (Mark Isfeld) who boosted her point contribution from four (3 kills, 1 ace) on Thursday to an impressive 15 (13 kills, 2 aces) on Friday.

“As we look ahead to this weekend's matches versus VIU we need to maintain a steadfast belief that our story will be told by the journey we take through the course of the season,” stated Coach Dahl. “This weekend’s match with VIU marks another opportunity to gather information about ourselves and monitor our strengths, weaknesses and progress. It's still early in the season ... we need to remember this and stay the course.”

Going into the second week of PacWest competition, the Chargers men are ranked number one while the women are locked in a three-way tie for first place. Catch the Chargers this weekend as they take on the VIU Mariners in double header action at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

Second-year rightside Hilary Graham led with 13 kills, 9 blocks and 2 aces. Second-year leftside Taylor Fedosoff was close behind with 9 kills, 13 digs and 1 block.

Second-year leftside and Victoria native Elizabeth Davis (Glenlyon Norfolk) led the Chargers women with 8 kills and 5 digs.

Men's set scores: (25-22, 25-20, 25-16)
In his first appearance with the Chargers, fourth-year rightside Andrew Inglis (Red Deer) posted 10 kills, 2 digs, 1 block and 1 ace.

The Chargers face off against the COTR Avalanche again tomorrow at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (Women 6pm; Men 7:45pm).

Chargers men’s volleyball squad set to return to winning ways

The Camosun College Chargers men’s volleyball team heads into the opening matches of the 2011-12 season with a mixture of experience and enthusiasm and a lot more height, with eight returning players and six new athletes.

Following a season plagued by injury, the Chargers are looking forward to getting back to the winning ways that netted them two consecutive Provincial Championships and a National Bronze.

Returning student-athletes include fourth-year team captain Garrett Marcellus, who at 6’6” will see duty both in the middle and outside, as well as third-year leftside Stephen Richter from South Surrey, third-year middle blocking veteran Denis Boyd and setter Davis Proch who is looking to lead the team to victory in his third season. Starting their second season with the Chargers are Norwegian leaper Jon Joerstad who moves from the right side to the left, outside hitters Jeremy Finn and Alex Wolf and second Libero Chhase McFarlen.

Joining the team this season are 6’7” Alex Sadowski, a Belmont grad who, at 225 lbs, packs a mean punch behind his middle attacks, 6’6” Eric Riedstra, another middle returning to school after a year off and who was a member of the PacWest All Rookie team in his first season, and 6’5” Andy Inglis, who played his first three years at Red Deer College and brings a wealth of experience and passion, not to mention kill power, to the Chargers line up.

Also joining the Chargers this season are two setters – Ryan Thain, former BC High School and Provincial Championship first team all- star, and Tanner Litwin, in his first year of setting from Grand Prairie, Alberta. Rounding out the roster is Tanner March, a versatile 6’2” left side athlete from Kelowna who can also assume the Libero role.

Undoubtedly, the competition in the PacWest this year will be the fiercest it has ever been, with National Champions Columbia Bible College returning most of its players and teams like Douglas College, Capilano University and VIU upgraded as well. But with this year’s line-up, Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson is confident that Camosun will be among the PACWEST’s top contenders.

“You’ll see us serving and blocking harder than in previous years,” commented Coach Parkinson. “It will be a challenge for opposing hitters to get the ball by our front row which will be big in every rotation. The balls that do make it to the back row will be brought up by a disciplined defense and set to the outsides for transition attacks out of the front and back rows.”

Chargers women’s volleyball program – history in the making

Despite being just a day away from playing their home openers for the season, the Camosun College Chargers 2011-12 women’s volleyball team has already made history with a record number of outstanding players who are suiting up for tomorrow night’s match.

Thanks to the successful recruiting efforts of Head Coach Chris Dahl, the Chargers have welcomed six solid returnees back to the fold as well as eight talented newcomers to start off what is anticipated to be the program’s most exciting season.

Making their post-secondary debut is a trio of Team BC players from Delta (Seaquam) Carly Hilliard (6’0” middle), Olivia Redden (6’1” middle) and setter Kelsey Clarke (5’8”). While representing BC at the 18U National Team Challenge Cup in 2010, Hilliard earned a Bronze medal while Redden and Clarke captured Gold at this year’s event with Coach Dahl at the helm.

Also joining Camosun from off the Island is Jamie Fleet (Penticton), a former teammate of returning player Suzanna Campbell who will play the middle position at 6’1”.

Camosun recruits also include Team BC Beach players Kelsey Johnson from Nanaimo (Woodlands) in the Libero position and Angela Richards from Mill Bay (Frances Kelsey) playing leftside.

Victoria native Melanie McKinnon (Reynolds) joins the Chargers following three years competing for Acadia University in Halifax. The leftside player also represented Nova Scotia at the 2009 Canada Games in Beach.

2010 BC Summer Games Beach player, Morgan Marshall (Smithers) wraps up the list of recruits for the Chargers. The rightside player is a graduate of the Richmond Oval Volleyball Canada program and one of two athletes on this year’s roster who has made it into the history books as Camosun’s first pair of second generation teammates.

Joining Marshall in those books is returning player Taylor Fedosoff (Nanimo). Taylor’s mother Tara Fedosoff (nee Senft) and Morgan Marshall’s mother Anita were teammates with the UBC Thunderbirds women’s volleyball program. Anita was selected as a Canada West All-Star in 1984 and 1985. Tara was recognized as a Canada West All-Star 1982, 1983, 1986 and a CIS All-Canadian in 1986. It is hoped that Camosun will benefit from this fantastic gene pool!

Returning to start their second year with the Chargers are 2009 and 2010 Team BC players Elizabeth Davis (Glenlyon Norfolk) and Suzanna Campbell (Penticton). Last year, Davis (leftside) was named the BCCAA Rookie of the Year and earned a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star. Both Davis and Campbell (setter) were named to the BCCAA All-Rookie Team.

Completing the list of returnees are rightside players from Courtenay Jenna Brown and Hilary Graham and leftside Mariah Holmstrom from Campbell River.

The Chargers face the College of the Rockies Avalanche tomorrow night in their season openers at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (Women 6pm; Men 7:45pm).

Chargers golf team strikes gold

The Camosun College Chargers struck gold over the long weekend, winning the 2011 PACWEST Golf title and earning a trip to the PING CCAA National Golf Championships next week in Roseneath, Prince Edward Island.

The fourth and deciding tournament of the PACWEST series was hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades golf them and held at their home course at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club, October 8-9.

Going into the weekend in second spot with a team total of 1766 after three tournaments, the Chargers were only one stroke off the lead which was held by Capilano University.

The situation changed dramatically following the first day of play where the host team shot a low of 286 to sit nine strokes ahead of the pack. Camosun finished the day second with a total of 296 while Capilano ended the first round of play with 299.

On Day 2, Thompson Rivers University captured the low score shooting 290. UBC-Okanagan finished one stroke off the lead with 291 and Vancouver Island University ended the day with 293. The Chargers shot 294 which gave them a two-day total of 589.

Despite finishing two strokes off UFV’s two-day low of 587, the Chargers went on to win gold with a cumulative team total of 2355 over four tournaments. Making a great come-back from last week’s fifth-place PACWEST ranking was Fraser Valley who earned silver with 2359.

Three Chargers finished in the PACWEST’s Top 10 Individuals following the fourth and final tournament. Included were Jared Hundza (5th with 584), Jordan Krulicki (6th with 585) and Kevin Walz (9th with 589).

“It was great to accomplish our first goal of the season,” commented Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “And it was great to see everyone step up to the plate. Right now, we’re working towards our next goal which is Nationals! ”

The Chargers leave Victoria this Sunday to compete in the 2011 PING CCAA National Championships at the Rodd Brudenell River Golf Course. The opening round for the three-day event is scheduled for Wednesday October 19.

The Chargers’ travel roster for the National Championships includes fifth-year players Phil Kondrak , Jordan Krulicki and Kevin Walz, third-year veteran Justin Deol and second-year student-athlete Jared Hundza.

Camosun Head Coach John Randle was selected by his peers as the PACWEST nominee for the CCAA National Golf Coach of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at the closing ceremonies of the National Championships on Friday, October 21.

Riverside crowned Chargers 2011 Sr. Girls' HS Tournament Champs

The Camosun College Chargers Women's Volleyball Sr Girls' High School Tournament was a great success featuring an incredibly strong field with representation from the top ranked teams in BC.

Riverside (Port Coquitlam) entered the tournament as the #1 ranked AAAA Girls school in BC, Seaquam (Delta) as the #1 AAA team and Lambrick Park (Victoira) represented the AA division as their #1 ranked school. Lambrick Park was also the defending Champion.

The following schools added to the depth in the tournament (ranking and division provided): South Delta (Delta) #9 AAAA, Highland (Courtenay) #4 AAA, Crofton House (Vancouver) #8 AAA, Brentwood College (Mill Bay) #4 AA.

Amongst the 20 teams that entered the competition, it was Riverside that took the title with defending champs, Lambrick Park finishing second and Seaquam taking third.

Chargers host Senior Girls' High School Volleyball Tournament Oct. 7-8

The Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team will host its annual Senior Girls’ High School Tournament this weekend with 20 teams from the region competing for this year’s crown. Matches will be played at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence and St. Margaret’s School.

The draw includes last year’s gold medal winners from Lambrick Park as well as silver medalists, Mt. Doug and bronze medalists, Belmont

The full roster of teams includes Claremont, Oak Bay, Spectrum, St. Margaret’s, St. Michael’s, Reynolds, Duncan Christian, Mark Isfeld, Brentwood College, Riverside, Seaquam, South Delta, Highland, Crofton House, Guildford Park, North Delta and Princess Margaret.

The action begins on Friday, October 7th at 3:00pm and continues on through Saturday. Gold and bronze medal matches are scheduled for 3:40pm at PISE.

Chargers golfers post first PACWEST win at Bear Mountain

The Camosun College Chargers golf team won its first tournament of the season on home ground this past weekend and moved up to the number two spot in the PACWEST rankings. The two-day tournament was held at Bear Mountain with both rounds played on the skill-testing Mountain course.

Although the home team did not produce a low score on either day, it was steady play throughout the tournament that earned the win for the Camosun squad.

On Saturday, Capilano University came out on top shooting an impressive 290 which was achieved in large part to CAP Blues player Kyle Moody’s low contribution of 65. Camosun ended the day three strokes behind the lead with 293 to take second. Trailing by eight, Thompson Rivers University came in third with 301.

Sunday proved to be a tougher day on the greens for most of the teams and a new winner emerged from the pack. The VIU Mariners claimed the low of the day with a total of 296. TRU came in second, shooting one stroke over the lead while Camosun stayed in the top three with 304.

Capilano’s Kyle Moody earned the low individual score with a two-day total of 140. Will Deck from UBCO shot 143 and one stroke over was Matt Cell from VIU. Brett Pound from TRU shot 145 while Camosun fifth-year veteran Jordan Krulicki (Red Deer) tied with TRU’s James Lane for fifth (147).

In the number two spot heading into the final PACWEST tournament of the season, the Chargers stand one stroke off leaders, the Capilano Blues and six up on the third-place UFV Cascades.

Lambrick Park wins 2011 High School Boys’ Fall Classic

With a record 17 teams (including a Junior Boys division of five teams) competing over the weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, the 2011 High School Boys’ Fall Classic sponsored by the Camosun College Chargers Men’s Volleyball program was a huge success.

The Championship Final was perhaps the best and closest battle in the history of the event, with Lambrick Park facing a PCS team that found their form as the tournament unfolded. The match went the distance, with Lambrick able to claw their way back from match point against to secure the win in a very emotional and raucous PISE gymnasium. The Consolation Final was also a closely contested affair with Duncan Christian outlasting a game squad from Mt Doug.

Chargers men host annual high school volleyball tournament

Fifteen teams will gather this weekend at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence to take part in the 2011 Camosun College Chargers Men's Volleyball Senior Boys’' High School Tournament. The action starts Friday, September 30 at 4:00pm and will end with teams battling to advance in Saturday’s single knock-out playoff schedule.

“We looked at the Provincial High School Championship format and their use of power pools in their draw and decided last year to do the same,” remarked Chargers Head Coach Charles Parkinson. “Pools are comprised of closely ranked teams and they play an initial round robin, which makes for really competitive and entertaining matches. All teams move on to a second round robin based on the first pool finishes and this sets everyone up for a single knock out play-off on both the Championship and Consolation sides of the draw. It makes for an interesting and challenging tournament as each team has a minimum of 5 matches which allows coaches to use all their players and experiment with different line-ups.”

Due to changes in the PACWEST league schedule, the Chargers’ event had to be moved to the same weekend as the very large UBC tournament.

Local schools competing in this weekend’s event include Reynolds, Pacific Christian, Ballenas, Lambrick Park, Claremont, Dover Bay, Oak Bay, Gulf Islands, Stelly’s, Belmont, Mt. Doug and Duncan Christian.

“We have been pleasantly surprised this year,” commented Coach Parkinson. “We have 15 teams registered including four junior teams, a first for us. All in all, we are looking forward to a wonderful event which will showcase the talent on the Island and allow us to get a look at athletes who may become future Chargers.”

Chargers golf team slips to third after PacWest Tournament #2

The Camosun College Chargers golf team slipped one spot down the PacWest rankings to number three this past weekend after taking on the challenging Quail and Bear courses at the Okanagan Golf Club in Kamloops. Hosted by UBC-Okanagan, the event was the second of four tournaments to be played on the Pacific Western Athletic Association’s Fall 2011 schedule.

The Chargers had a great first round at the Quail on Saturday (September 24) and ended the day with a 286 team total, just four strokes over the low of the day which was shot by the Capilano University Blues.

Round two of the tournament which was played the following day at the Okanagan Golf Club’s Bear course proved to be a big set-back for Camosun as the squad raised their total for the day to 303. The Vancouver Island Mariners shot 291 to earn the low score for Sunday’s round.

“The guys had a tough day on Sunday, but I am really proud of how they hung in to the end,” commented Chargers Head Coach John Randle. “When the dust settled, after a bad day, we were only two out of the lead for the season.”

The low individual score was claimed by Capilano’s Cody Bell (66 + 73) who shot a two-day total of 139. Five players tied for the third lowest two-day total, including Camosun’s fifth-year veteran Jordan Krulicki (Red Deer) who ended the tournament with a total of 145. Chargers newcomer and last week’s low individual shot-maker, Jared Hundza sat one stroke back with 146.

Heading into Tournament #3 of the PacWest season, the Chargers stand in third place – six strokes off the leading UFV Cascades and four over the number two Capilano Blues.

Chargers tip-off dinner raises over $18K for student-athlete scholarships

The Camosun College Chargers 5th Annual Tip-Off Dinner raised over $18,000 in support of student-athlete scholarships this past Friday at the Harbour Towers Hotel.

The event was emceed by CTV Sports Anchor Mira Laurence and Sports Reporter Steve Duffy from CFAX 1070 who auctioned a host of luxury, getaway and sports memorabilia items to an audience of 90+ guests. Items included a night at the world-class Sooke Harbour House and framed jerseys – one signed by Canuck come-back kid Manny Maholtra and another signed by Rugby Canada’s Men’s Churchill Cup Team.

Following a delicious buffet dinner, Canadian Basketball coaching icon Don Horwood presented a short address on the importance of perseverance. Horwood gave examples from his 40+ years experience as a coach and provided some insight on how successful individuals handle losses and set-backs to achieve their goals.

That evening, alumnae Cortney Lowther (nee Parks) was recognized for her dedication to the Chargers program as both a coach and a student-athlete. Lowther spent a record-breaking eight years with the Chargers before leaving the program to start a family of her own. True to form, Lowther managed to attend Friday’s event despite having given birth to her first child just days prior!

Although the new mom was not among those who laced up the following night at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, 18 former student-athletes did as the Chargers took on the Alumni. On the women’s side, it was the Alumni who blasted past the Chargers 57-36 while the Camosun men showed their Alumni opponents no mercy posting an 85-51 win.

Earlier that day, the Chargers held a FREE Coaches’ Clinic with 20 coaches ranging from U12 to high-school senior teams in attendance. Coaches received two hours of offensive and defensive skills and drills along with a strength training workout with PISE's Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Matt Fisher.

The Chargers’ Fundamentals Academy kicked off on Sunday morning at St. Margaret’s School where 24 players from grades 6-12 whose abilities ranged from beginner to some of the best senior girls in the city ran through skills and drills led by Chargers women’s basketball Head Coach Brett Westcott, Assistant Coach Gary Baker and members of the Chargers team.

"Everything went well this past weekend as we started our season, at least until we had to play our alumni,” quipped Head Coach Brett Westcott.

The Chargers basketball teams will compete in exhibition play during the month of October before the PacWest season officially begins. Camosun takes on the Kwantlen University Eagles in their first home games of the season on Friday, November 11 at PISE (Women 6pm; Men 8pm).

Chargers basketball pre-season weekend begins

The Chargers basketball Tip-Off Dinner is only a day away but it is only the beginning of a very busy weekend for the Camosun hoopsters.

Tomorrow, the teams will host the fifth annual Tip-Off Dinner and Auction Fundraiser event at the Harbour Towers Hotel. Tickets are still available for Friday’s event which features special guest, Canadian basketball coaching icon Don Horwood along with the entertaining antics of emcees Mira Laurence of CTV Vancouver Island News and Steve Duffy from CFAX 1070. Guests will also be provided with a sumptuous buffet dinner and the chance to bid on an array of luxury, vacation and sport collection items up for auction. Cost is $150 per ticket (includes $75 tax receipt) with proceeds going towards student-athlete scholarships.

On Saturday, the Chargers will host two FREE events for the community at the Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence. In the morning, the teams will host their annual Coaches Clinic which begins at 10am and is open to all elementary, middle and high school coaches. On Saturday evening, everyone is invited to cheer on their favorite team as the Chargers take on the Alumni in exhibition play (Women 6pm; Men 8pm).

Tipping off for the Alumni women are Kate Carlson (three-time CCAA National Scholar Athlete, CCAA Academic All-Canadian, BCCAA Academic Excellence, BCCAA All-Star), Teresa Hartrick (CCAA Academic All-Canadian, BCCAA Academic Excellence, BCCAA All-Star), Lauryn Kerr (two-time CCAA National Scholar Athlete, BCCAA Academic Excellence, two-time Camosun College President’s Cup Award Recipient), Kendall Allen (CAA National Scholar, BCCAA Academic Excellence), Niki Lukat (CCAA National Scholar Athlete) as well as Christine Ireland, Rachel Carlson, Danielle New and Jessica Hickey.

On the men’s side, the Chargers will face former Camosun and CIS greats Brandon Dunlop (BCCAA All-Star, BCCAA Rookie of the Year), Braydon Janzen (BCCAA Athlete of the Week), Greg Wallis (BCCAA All-Star) and Jeff Spoor (CCAA National Scholar Athlete, CCAA All-Canadian and CCAA Academic All-Canadian). Currently injured, Spoor will be giving direction from the bench. Rounding up the alum roster are Dylan Borgerson, John Craig-DeBoer, Evan Janzen, Zach McCool, Adeit Omule, Rob Schellenberg and Max Bell.

The Chargers will wrap up the weekend with the Chargers Fundamentals Academy which kicks-off on Sunday morning at St. Margaret’s School.

Camosun's Hundza earns PACWEST Athlete of the Week

UBC transfer student Jared Hundza claimed top spot on the newly named PACWEST Leaderboard this past weekend. A graduate of Pacific Christian School, Hundza shot a two-day lead total of 139 (68 + 71) making him the top individual golfer of the first sanctioned tournament of the 2011 season and PACWEST Male Athlete of the Week.

Aaron Pauls of the University of the Fraser Valley placed second, shooting one stroke off the lead with a total of 140 (68 +72). Mitch Lock of the University of the Fraser Valley and Kevin Walz of Camosun College tied for 3rd with 144 strokes each.

At the end of the two-day tournament hosted by Thompson Rivers University, UFV came ahead in first place with a total of 574. Jared Hundza and his Camosun Chargers finished 6 strokes behind the leaders and Capilano University finished in third.

The next tournament is set for September 24-25 in Kelowna hosted by UBC Okanagan.

Chargers women's volleyball team downed in opening scrimmage

The Camosun Chargers women's volleyball team fell in scrimmage play against the VIU Mariners yesterday 1-3 (13-25, 20-25, 25-19, 20-25). Held at a neutral site at Ballenas Secondary in Parksville, the scrimmage event provided an opportunity for early season competition against last year's CCAA Silver medallists.

"VIU provides an excellent training and competition opportunity for our young Camosun program," said Head Coach Chris Dahl. "They are experienced and play with poise, even at this early stage in the season. It is important for our growing program to constantly measure ourselves against an opponent like this."

The Camosun roster for the early season tilt was comprised of seven new faces and four second year athletes. Kelsey Clarke (Delta), Angela Richards (Mill Bay), Melanie McKinnon (Victoria), Olivia Redden (Delta), Jamie Fleet (Penticton), Kelsey Johnson (Nanaimo), and Natalie Delange (Courtenay) represented the Chargers for the first time and joined second year athletes Suzanna Campbell (BCCAA All Rookie), Jenna Brown, Taylor Fedosoff and Rachael Mokosak.

Fellow Chargers Elizabeth Davis (BCCAA Rookie of the Year, 2nd Team All Star), Hilary Graham, Mariah Holmstrom and newcomers Carly Hilliard and Morgan Marshall remained in Victoria to train both on the court and in the weight room.

"Last night we had athletes training in Parksville and in Victoria at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence," stated Coach Dahl. "We wanted some of our new faces to lineup across the net with one of the top programs in the country. At this time of the year we are working hard to adjust technically for the season to come. Some of our athletes were given the opportunity to train in the competitive arena last night while others remained in the program and worked hard in a small group setting. It is an ideal scenario for the third week of September."

Second year rightside Jenna Brown (Courtenay) produced 12 points (9 kills, 2 stuff block, 1 service ace) for the Chargers on the evening in what was clearly an early season contest for both teams.

"I expect both programs to improve immensely in the weeks to come," remarked Coach Dahl. "Last night's play produced a lot of errors, many of them unforced. These things will clean up as we near the start of PacWest league play."

The Chargers pre-season schedule will resume October 2nd in North Vancouver at Capilano University and a final match-up versus VIU in Duncan on October 3rd (7:00pm match time at Duncan Christian Secondary).

"We will travel to these events with our full roster," said Coach Dahl. "I'm looking forward to the having these opportunities to measure and mark our progress."

Camosun Chargers PacWest regular season play begins at home on October 13th and 14th versus the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

Match times are 6:00pm women and 7:45pm men on each night.

Camosun recruit claims low total at PacWest Tournament #1

Despite his status as a first-year student-athlete at Camosun, UBC transfer student Jared Hundza quickly claimed the top spot on the Leaderboard this past weekend as the newly-named PACWEST hit the links to begin the 2011 golf season.

A graduate of Pacific Christian School, Hundza played a year of eligibility with the UBC Thunderbirds before transferring to Camosun where he is currently enrolled in the Business Administration program.

Hundza shot a lean two-day total of 139 (68 + 71) which made him the top individual golfer of the tournament. Student-athletes Mitch Lock (UFV) and fifth-year veteran Kevin Walz from Camosun tied for third with 144.

Chargers Phil Kondrak (St. Andrew’s) and Jordan Krulicki (Red Deer, AB) who are also entering their fifth-year of eligibility shot 147 and 151 respectively while Camosun newcomer Brady Stead (Vernon) finished with 153.

At the end of the two-day tournament hosted by Thompson Rivers University, UFV came ahead in first place with a total of 574. Camosun finished six strokes back in second while Capilano University placed third with 587 .

Camosun golfers assemble for 2011 season opener

Returning for his fourth year as head coach of the Camosun College Chargers golf team, PGA Professional John Randle took on his first challenge of the season this past weekend – assembling his 2011 squad.

“Over twenty keen and talented students made their way up to the Chargers home course at Bear Mountain for try-outs this weekend,” remarked Coach Randle. “It was an outstanding group and making the final selections was not an easy task.”

The Chargers 2011 eight-man roster includes a trio of fifth-year veterans – Kevin Walz (Kwalikum Secondary, Qualicum Beach), Phil Kondrak (St. Andrews, Victoria) and Jordan Krulicki (Notre Dame, Red Deer, AB) plus returnee Justin Deol (Cowichan Secondary, Duncan). Newcomers to the Camosun squad include Jared Hundza (Pacific Christian, Victoria), Devin Pittman (Kwalikum Secondary, Qualicum Beach), Brady Stead (Vernon Secondary) and Rob Wildman (Lord Beaverbrook, Calgary).

Last year, Camosun ended the season with a BCCAA Provincial Bronze medal – behind Silver medalists, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades and 2010 BCCAA Champions, the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

The Chargers also competed at the 2010 PING CCAA National Golf Championships where they finished fourth out of 18 of the nation’s top collegiate teams and just five strokes shy of placing in the medals. Humber College claimed the title, while UFV and Georgian College finished with Silver and Bronze respectively.

The Chargers open the 2011 season with a trip to Kamloops this weekend as Thompson Rivers University hosts PacWest Tournament #1 at the Dunes Golf Club, September 17-18.

Chargers Alumnae Enters the NCAA

Camosun College Chargers women's volleyball alumnae Loren Cory has joined the University of Central Florida Knights (Orlando, Florida) competing in Conference USA, a member of NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball. The Knights are currently 8-2 in pre-season competition and recently claimed a huge win against the USC Trojans (Los Angeles, California), sweeping the number three team 25-16, 25-20, 25-22. The Knights are currently ranked 30th in the nationwide American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) poll.

"This is a great move for our alumni as Loren enters into the top level of competition south of the border,” stated Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “We will without a doubt miss Loren here at Camosun, but are extremely proud of where she is now. Loren's comments from Florida have been nothing but positive so I couldn't be happier for her."

Loren entered the Camosun College women's volleyball program in Fall 2010 from Gold Coast, Australia. As a product of the Australian National Team program as a Youth and Junior, Loren brought International experience and leadership to a Camosun program that was entering year one under new Head Coach Chris Dahl. Entering the season, Loren was still recovering from an injury suffered in Australia, an injury that persisted for the majority of her 2010-11 campaign with the Chargers.

"We knew from the outset that Loren was recovering,” stated Coach Dahl. Her goals with the program were to continue with her recovery while maintaining technical and tactical advancement and help prepare her to return to competition. Camosun provided that for her and the rest of the formula she delivered. It's that combination of resources, commitment, drive and patience that has placed Loren at the highest level of competition today."

Indisputably, some of the Chargers’ greatest resources are found at home in the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. The Chargers are fortunate to have the expertise of PISE’s Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Matt Fisher and his team as well as the services of LifeMark Sport Medicine and the work performed by Camosun’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Education Athletic Therapy students, all of which have been key in providing the Chargers with a unique training experience.

"We focus on the process, on the details of training in a technically sound and responsible manner on a daily basis,” said Coach Dahl. “We try to convey that message in everything we do, be it in our own environment or the camps and clinics we are involved in with local youth. We are consistent in that message and Loren is a great example of how student-athletes can adopt these values and excel at what they do."

BCCAA changes name to PACWEST

The former British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association, commonly known as the BCCAA, is now the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST).

The new name better represents the membership of the association, which includes colleges and universities. “We are very proud to be carrying on the tradition of excellence in sport and education that the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association has been known for. We feel the PACWEST name does an excellent job of identifying who we are and what we do and will give us a significant advantage as we implement our marketing plans. The PACWEST name and logo will soon be synonymous with athletic excellence in Canada” said Bruce Hunter, PACWEST President.

Chargers host 5th Annual Tip-Off Dinner featuring Canadian basketball coaching legend, Don Horwood

Join the Camosun College Chargers men's and women's basketball coaches and student-athletes for an evening of food, entertainment and fundraising at the Chargers 5th Annual Tip-Off Dinner at the Harbour Towers Hotel on Friday, September 23rd.

This year, the Chargers are pleased to present Canadian basketball coaching legend Don Horwood.

Born in Carbonear, Newfoundland (population 3500), Don attended a high school that did not even have a physical education teacher or a basketball program until his final year – and in that year, the team only played two games!

Following high school, Don attended Memorial University in St. John’s where he played basketball as a “small forward” and became captain in his senior year. Upon graduation, he coached at Brother Rice High School (St. John's) for the 1968-69 season before moving to the west coast. Don coached at Oak Bay High School in Victoria until 1978, winning the BC Provincial Championship three times. The Bays appeared in the Provincial Final five of six seasons during his term.

After leaving Oak Bay, Don entered Graduate School at the University of Alberta where he earned a Masters degree in Physical Education and served as assistant coach of the Golden Bears for one season under former head coach Garry Smith (1978-1979). Don returned to Victoria from 1979-1983 where he coached a fledging team at Spectrum High School that started with only five players and went 3-33 in its first year – a year in which Don claims he learned more about coaching than any he can remember.

Over his 26 year tenure as head coach of the University of Alberta Golden Bears, Don guided the program to three CIS titles, two national silver medals, and one bronze in 15 CIS championship tournament appearances. Under his direction, the team also won seven Canada West titles.

Standing among the all-time CIS leaders for coaching wins, Don is a three-time CIS coach of the year and possesses a 302-170 (.640 winning percentage) conference record; a 71-57 (.555) playoff record and an overall record of 572-338 (.629).

Despite his humble beginnings, Don is living proof that anything is possible. Following a coaching career that spanned over 40 years, Don retired at the end of the 2008-09 season. He was named to the Oak Bay High School Hall of Fame in 2003 and the City of Edmonton Hall of Fame in 2008. During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Don was the basketball color commentator for CBC Television.

The Chargers 5th Annual Tip-Off Dinner Fundraiser begins at 5:30pm with a reception sponsored by the Vancouver Island Brewery. Guests will also be treated to a full buffet dinner, followed by Don Horwood’s presentation and the chance to bid on an array of exciting live and silent auction items.

Tickets for the event are $150 per person and include a $75 tax receipt. Corporate tables are available.

The Camosun College Chargers begin their 18th season of competition this year in the British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association - the largest intercollegiate sport organization in Canada with over 100 member institutions representing five regional athletic conferences.

The Chargers will be holding open try-outs in basketball and volleyball for the 2011-2012 season in their home at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (4371 Interurban Road) on Camosun’s Interurban Campus.

Golf try-outs will be held at the Chargers' home course at Bear Mountain - Canada's only 36 holes of Nicklaus Design golf.

Camosun celebrates successes of Chargers student-athletes

2010-11 President's Cup recipient Blake Mansbridge (MBB) with Camosun President Kathryn Laurin

Student-athletes, coaches and supporters of the Camosun College Chargers gathered at the Harbour Towers Hotel last night to recognize the achievements of the College's student-athletes and coaches at the Chargers' 17th Annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.

Two Camosun student-athletes were awarded major prizes at the event which was emceed by 'A' Vancouver Island News sports anchor/reporters Mira Laurence and Jordan Cunningham.

Third-year guard Blake Mansbridge (Dover Bay, Nanaimo) from the Chargers men's basketball team earned the prestigious President's Cup award for achieving the highest academic standing of his peers for the Fall 2010 semester (8.67 GPA) in Camosun's Associate of Arts Degree program and for his high level of commitment to the Chargers athletics program.

"As a dedicated individual with a competitive edge and strong work ethic, Blake is a wonderful example of how Camosun's student-athletes are striving for absolute excellence," said Camosun President Kathryn Laurin.

Mansbridge was also described as a great leader and teammate and someone that everyone is proud to know. While presently undecided about his career goals, the 6'2" guard is considering the option of moving to Ontario where he will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Brandon.

Second-year Stephen Richter from the Chargers men's volleyball program was the recipient of the Linda Henderson Award for Excellence for demonstrating commitment, strength of character and a high level of proficiency in the sport of volleyball.

The second-year 6'3" leftside hitter from Whiterock transferred to Camosun this past Fall from Thompson Rivers University and is enrolled in the College's Business Administration program.

"Stephen is very balanced in his approach to volleyball, school and life in general," said Chargers men's volleyball Head Coach Charles Parkinson. "He sees the humor in life and in the process of living had has a unique way of presenting it."

Both Mansbridge and Richter joined five other Chargers student-athletes in receiving the BCCAA Academic Excellence Award sponsored by Accent Inns for achieving an academic honours standing over a minimum period of one full academic year and 27 credit hours. Included were Ryan Erikson - University Transfer (men's basketball), Kelsey Fletcher - Business Administration (women's volleyball), Henrik Herrebroeden - Associate of Arts (men's volleyball), Chelsea McMullen - Sports Management (women's basketball) and Jessica Williams - University Transfer (women's basketball).

Five student-athletes were acknowledged for their Team Leadership throughout the year. Among those were Blake Mansbridge (men's basketball), Anya Weare (women's basketball), Chris Abra (men's volleyball), Loren Cory (women's volleyball) and Kevin Walz (men's golf).

Five additional student-athletes were recognized as Team Rookie. Those included Suzanna Campbell from Penticton Senior Secondary(women's volleyball), from Oslo, Norway . Jon Joerstad (men's volleyball), Stelly's grad Jordan Elvedahl (men's basketball), Jordan Krulicki from Red Deer (men's golf) and Aija Salvador from Oak Bay High (women's basketball).

A final group of Camosun athletes were honoured for motivating others through demonstrating outstanding character and a positive attitude. The Team Spirit award was presented to Blaine Barron (men's volleyball), Ryan Erikson (men's basketball), Jessica Williams (women's basketball) and Hilary Graham (women's volleyball).

"I'm very proud of all the hard work and accomplishments made by our student-athletes and coaches and we are looking forward to the season ahead," said Camosun Recreation and Athletics Coordinator Graham Matthews.

Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tournament Results, March 26-27, 2011

The Douglas College Royals women's team and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men walked away with spoils of the first-ever Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tournament March 26-27, 2011.

The Royals women posted a two-player low score of 331 over the two-day event, beating the second-place Mt. Royal University Cougars by 38 strokes.

Camosun’s Mansbridge and McMullen named Academic All-Canadians

SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) are proud to announce the 2010-2011 SIRC-CCAA Academic All-Canadian Award recipients. This year, 143 student-athletes from across the nation have achieved combined excellence in collegiate athletics and academics, an increase from 119 recipients in the 2009-2010 season.

The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award is the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete award, epitomizing the CCAA’s mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve this award, a student-athlete must be named to his/her respective PCAA All-Star teams (1st and 2nd) in a CCAA Sport, and must achieve honours standing at their Institution.

Among this year’s award winners are third-year Camosun College Chargers basketball student-athletes Blake Mansbridge (Nanaimo) and Chelsea McMullen (Prince George).

Mansbridge completed the 2010-2011 season with a total of 285 points, averaging 16.8 point per game which ranked him sixth overall in the league. The 6’2” guard earned a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star for his outstanding performance while posting top grades in Camosun’s Associate of Arts Degree program.

Chelsea McMullen from the Chargers women’s basketball team also earned academic honours as a second-year student in Camosun’s Sport Management program. While scoring big points in the classroom, the 5’11” wing/point collected her second career BCCAA 1st Team All-Star averaging of 20.5 points and 7.44 rebounds per game. McMullen ended the season ranked second overall in points and seventh in rebounds.

Chargers open 2011 season with Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tourney

The Camosun College Chargers golf team will have an early start to the 2011 season as they go up against some of the best teams from BC and Alberta at the first-ever Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tournament this weekend, March 26-27.

The brain-child of Camosun Chargers Head Coach and Academy Director at the Bear Mountain Resort, John Randle, the Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tournament will be the first of many to come if all goes well this weekend.

“Camosun College and Bear Mountain Resort are excited to be hosting the first annual Bear Mountain Collegiate event,” said Coach Randle. “I am really pleased that we can host a tournament in the spring season and I’m hopeful this will be the first of many future events aimed at expanding Chargers golf at Camosun to a full year program”.

Several of the nation’s top men’s golf teams will be hitting the links at the Bear this weekend including the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (2010 PING CCAA National Silver Medalists and 2010 BCCAA Silver Medalists), the Vancouver Island University Mariners (2010 BCCAA Gold Medalists), the 2010 BCCAA Bronze Medalist Camosun College Chargers, the Mt. Royal Cougars (2010 Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference Champions) and 2010 ACAC Silver Medalists, the Grant MacEwan Griffins.

On the women’s side, 2010 ACAC Champions from Grant MacEwan will be facing off against 2010 ACAC Bronze medalists, the Mt. Royal Cougars as well as players from Douglas College Royals and the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

Practice rounds begin on Friday, March 25. The tournament opens with shot gun start on Saturday, March 26 at 10:00am and on Sunday, March 27 at 9:00am.

“The golf course is in great shape and all the teams really looking forward to a spring event,” commented Coach Randle.

Chargers lose in Quarterfinals

The Camosun College Chargers men and women lost each of their quarterfinal games today at the BCCAA Provincial Basketball Championships in Abbotsford.

Men:
Capilano University Blues (#3) 79 - 52 Camosun College Chargers (#6)

Women:
UNBC Timberwolves (#4) 65 - 62 Camosun College Chargers (#5)

Third-year guard and BCCAA 2nd All-Star Blake Mansbridge led the Camosun men with 17 points followed by second-year forward Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt) who scored 14.

On the women's side, third-year wing/point and BCCAA 1st Team All-Star Chelsea McMullen posted an impressive 25 points and 14 rebounds. BCCAA Rookie of the Year Aija Salvador contributed 14 points while third-year wing/point Jessica Williams (Calgary) collected 11 points and 5 rebounds.

The Camosun men and women each end the post-season tied for fifth.

Chargers basketball athletes earn honors on way to Provincial Championships

With only two days remaining before the top teams in the Province tip-off at the 2010-2011 BCCAA Basketball Championships in Abbotsford, the Camosun College Chargers men and women are in final stages of preparation and celebrating the news announcing that three Chargers student-athletes were named to this year’s BCCAA Basketball Award Winners list.

With a season total of 285 points and an average of 16.8 points per game, third-year guard Blake Mansbridge (Dover Bay, Nanaimo) ended the year ranked sixth overall amongst league scorers and picked up a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star for his outstanding performance.

"We are very pleased to hear that Blake has been recognized by others for his contributions to our turnaround,” said Men’s Head Coach Craig Price. “The voting process is often reflective of a player’s numbers and Blake has been one of the top scorers in the league.”

On the women’s side, 2010 Sport BC College Athlete of the Year Nominee Chelsea McMullen collected her second career BCCAA 1st Team All-Star. The third-year wing/point from Prince George averaged 20.5 points and 7.44 rebounds per game this season.

“Chelsea has shown why she is one of the best players in our league again this season,” commented Head Coach of the Chargers Women, Brett Westcott. “She is quick and athletic for a post player which makes her a tough matchup for teams. Without her offensive output at times this season, we would have really struggled. She will be ready to step in at UVic next season where she will be playing and hopefully she can make a contribution right away to their success at the next level.”

First-year student-athlete Aija Salvador (Oak Bay) made a quite an impression on the league this year posting a total of 342 points (avg. 19/game) and earning a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star, an All-Rookie Team award and the highest accolade awarded to newcomers, the BCCAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year.

“Aija has done really well this season in a league which is dominated by third, fourth and fifth-year players,” said Coach Westcott. “Every team we play targets her and makes it their goal to pay special defensive attention to her so the fact she has scored almost 20 points per game with this kind of attention shows just what she is capable of becoming as a player. She has improved a lot during the season and she still has a long way to go in playing at both ends of the court and being a team leader. If she continues to improve, she will find lots of CIS opportunities there for her after next season.”

Though both Chargers teams are sporting more youth than experience this season, each squad is preparing to win the battle ahead.

“We expect to prepare to compete to win a championship,” said Women’s Head Coach Brett Westcott. “We know we are not a favorite to win this season, but there is no reason why we cannot play well and pull a couple of upsets to give us a chance to do well again this season. More than any season, there is not a clear favorite to win the championship so we hope we can find a way to advance round by round through the draw.”

While the two-time Silver medalist and 2008-09 Gold medalist Chargers women will be making their fifth consecutive appearance at the BCCAA Championships, it is the men’s first trip to Provincials since winning Bronze in 2007-08.

“This will be a new experience for everyone in our program, so we must stay focused on working hard and executing both offensively and defensively,” said Men’s Head Coach Craig Price. “We have a tendency to be inconsistent and play in spurts so we need to even-out our offensive execution and have consistent, concentrated possessions on defense. We are also working on establishing our inside game and wining the rebounding battle. Most of all, we want to go into the playoffs and compete every minute of every game we play.”

Camosun volleyball rookies earn top BCCAA honors

The British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association just announced their 2010-2011 Volleyball Award winners – among them are three first-year Camosun College Chargers student-athletes: men’s volleyball rightside from Oslo, Norway Jon Joerstad and Team BC Alumni players - leftside Elizabeth Davis from Victoria (Glenlyon) and setter Suzanna Campbell from Penticton (Pen High).

As one of two international students on the Chargers men’s volleyball roster, Jon Joerstad arrived at Camosun exclusively a beach volleyball player. Despite starting the season with very little technical, tactical or practical knowledge of indoor volleyball, Jon quickly developed into a triple threat for the Chargers with strong serving, blocking and attacking. He ended the season ranked 13th in blocks, 10th in kills and 8th in total offensive stats – his impressive work ethic and performance earned Jon a spot on this year’s BCCAA Men’s Volleyball All-Rookie Team.

Chargers Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Charles Parkinson said, “I couldn't be happier for Jon in being selected to the All-Rookie Team. It is the result of a lot of hard work, both in the gym and the weight room, and is well deserved. It is the coaches in the league that make these selections so this award is a testament to how they have had to revise their game plans as Jon has become a more confident and potent offensive and defensive threat.”

On the women’s side, Suzanna Campbell’s steady influence on the game earned the up and coming setter a well-deserved spot on the BCCAA Women’s Volleyball All-Rookie Team.

Suzanna has led the Chargers offense this season, which would be no small task for a veteran let alone a rookie,” commented Chargers Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Chris Dahl. “Our offensive patterning and pace are unique in the league and Suzanna continues to develop an understanding and high level of consistency in delivery. In true setter fashion, her abilities are best summed up by her ability to make provide opportunity for others. Suzanna has placed her hitters in amongst the league leaders statistically all season long.”

Collecting the lion’s share of awards for first-year athletes was Camosun’s Elizabeth Davis. Davis earned a BCCAA Second Team All-Star, was named to the BCCAA All-Rookie Team and won the coveted BCCAA Rookie of the Year award for women’s volleyball.

“Elizabeth has unbelievable talent and is committed to sharpening her skills,” remarked Coach Dahl. “She is a unique athlete who has only scratched the surface of her potential. Elizabeth has kept pace with the top outside hitters in the league this season with 136 total kills tracking at 3.16 kills per game which places her fifth amongst the league leaders and seventh in total offensive stats.”

“Suzanna and Elizabeth are part of a new Chargers Women's Volleyball program,” added Coach Dahl. “Their recognition from the BCCAA is well deserved and generates a lot of excitement as the program continues to move forward.”

Coach Dahl and the Chargers women’s volleyball team have one last practice at home tonight to make last-minute preparations before boarding the bus to Kelowna bound for the 2010-2011 BCCAA Provincial Championships in Kelowna hosted by UBC-Okanagan February 24-26.

The fifth-seeded Chargers will begin the tournament with a semi-final match against the fourth-seeded University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 6pm.

Chargers MBB downed by top-ranked Mariners

Though the Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team put forth a valiant effort, they could not keep pace with the #1 nationally ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners and were defeated 82-63 this evening at PISE.

Facing off against the number one team in the country and starting with a deficit of two of the team’s players (third-year guard Blake Mansbridge and first-year centre Jordan Pendlebury) the Chargers did well all things considered.

In the first quarter, Camosun was outscored 25-11 but came back in the second shooting just four points shy of the top team’s 21 points to end the first half 46-28.

The Chargers had an even better third quarter point for point, outscoring VIU 19-15 but it was not enough to catch up to the Mariners who were up 61-47. In the fourth, the visitors charged up 21 points to the Chargers’ 16 and took the game 82-63.

Second-year forward Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt) led the Chargers for the third consecutive week at home with 17 points 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Third-year wing Dylan Borgerson (Ladysmith) chalked up 15 points and first-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) scored 14.

The Chargers will be watching closely as Langara and Douglas play out their final games of the season tomorrow. The outcome of those games will determine who will place in the top six and move on to the playoffs. Stay tuned!

Despite giving their opponents a run for their money and pushing ahead to a 12 point lead in the first half of tonight’s game, the fifth-ranked Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team fell to the #2-ranked VIU Mariners 68-64 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

In the first quarter, the Chargers jumped to a quick 7-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game. The Mariners answered back seconds later with a three as their first entry on the scoreboard. At the two-minute mark, the teams were tied at seven but a free throw put VIU ahead by one with seven minutes to go. Camosun’s Christine Ireland hit a tres to make it 10-8 for the home team and a string of unanswered points that followed brought the game to 19-12 for the Chargers. The Chargers would score seven more points against the Mariners’six, including a three-pointer sunk in the last second of the first frame by first-year Charger Aija Salvadore to make it 26-18 for Camosun.

The second quarter featured low scoring for both teams, but despite being first to get on the board in the second quarter, the Mariners could not find the hoop for the majority of the period posting only three points to the Chargers’ seven which brought the game to 33-21 at the half.

Much to the dismay of a roaring home crowd, VIU answered back in the third outscoring Camosun 27-14 and stealing the lead by one with a timely tres shot by the Mariners in the final seconds of the quarter.

The Mariners held the lead all the way through the fourth and were up 58-49 at the 6.5 minute mark. Camosun came back with seven unanswered points to make it a two-point game but could not catch up to VIU who were determined to drive home with the win. The Chargers ended the evening down by four.

Third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen led the team once again with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Newcomer Aija Salvadore (Oak Bay) also playing wing/point came in close with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Next up for the Chargers women are the BCCAA Provincial Championships hosted by Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, March 3-5. This will be the program’s fifth consecutive appearance at the event.

Camosun’s McMullen and Erikson deliver top performances

Chargers basketball student-athletes third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen (Prince George) and second-year forward Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt) were formidable forces in helping their teams sweep past the Langara College Falcons this past weekend.

McMullen delivered strong performances over the past two weekends scoring a whopping 31 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals against UNBC on February 5 (leading Camosun to win 70-59 which resulted in a split weekend for the team) and posting a total of 37 points, 14 rebounds and 5 steals this past weekend against the Falcons to help put the Chargers in fifth place in league standings and secure their berth in the BCCAA playoffs.

Today, McMullen earned the BCCAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance. She currently sits second in the league in scoring at 20.07 points per game and sixth in rebounds at 7.60 per game.

"Chelsea has had two fairly solid weekends,” remarked Head Coach Brett Westcott. “She is a third-year player and she should be playing like she is at this time of the season. What need is a few more players to play just as well so we can go to the provincial playoffs and be competitive with the best teams."

While McMullen earned a BCCAA Athlete of the Week award for leading the Camosun women to their back-to-back wins, Chargers men’s Co-Captain Ryan Erikson had to settle for the respect of the fans and his coaches and teammates this time around as his nomination for the award was trumped by UNBC’s Inderber Gill.

“It’s disappointing,” said Head Coach Craig Price. “Ryan played his most focused, determined and disciplined weekend of his career last weekend. But that’s the way it goes. His performance will be just as crucial this coming weekend as we face the #1 nationally-ranked VIU Mariners and their fifth-year captain, and one of the best players in the BCCAA, Andrew Kaban.”

Erikson had a phenomenal weekend helping Camosun secure a much-needed sweep against the Langara College Falcons. The wins were essential in moving the squad another step forward in their push towards the playoffs.

Attracting a full house for both contests, the Chargers were cheered on by a roaring home crowd as they defeated the Falcons 74-60 on Friday and sealed their second “W” Saturday with a barn-burning double-overtime game that went into the triple digits with the home team clenching it 104-101.

Erikson was instrumental in helping the Chargers to both victories posting 18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 29:02 of play on Friday and clocking in a whopping 44:51 minutes on Saturday resulting in 28 points and 10 rebounds that were put towards the cause.

“One of those blocked shots saved the game for us in the overtime,” exclaimed Chargers Head Coach Craig Price. “He did not foul out of either game playing almost 75 minutes this weekend.”

Chargers women’s volleyball team sets up for playoffs

The Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team claimed a perfect weekend on the road, sweeping the College of the Rockies Avalanche in straight sets in both their contests this past Friday and Saturday. Ending the regular season with a fifth-place ranking, the team is headed to the BCCAA Championships hosted by the University of British Columbia - Okanagan February 24-26.

On Friday, the Chargers downed the Avalanche 25-12, 25-15, 25-21. First-year rightside Hilary Graham from Courtenay (Mark Isfled) was named player of the match with nine kills and one block. Strong performances were also made by rookie setter Suzanna Campbell (Penticton High) who chipped in three aces and six digs and veteran middles Cortney Fraser (eight kills and five blocks) and Brenna White (five kills, four blocks and one ace).

Fifth-year vet Brenna White (Calgary) returned to the court with another great game on Saturday and led the Chargers to their second win of the weekend (25-22, 25-12, 25-22). White collected seven kills, two blocks and an ace while newcomer Mariah Holmstrom on the leftside (Campbell River) kept pace with eight kills, one ace and six digs.

“We were able to focus on certain aspects of our game this weekend,” commented Chargers Head Coach Chris Dahl. “Some we made gains in, while others we focused on identifying gaps between where we are and where we need to be in two weeks. Those gaps are small but help drive us as we prepare for a specific opponent on playoffs.”

This week, the Chargers will reunite with first-year middle from Australia Loren Cory, third-year leftside Tanisha Marcelle (Spectrum) and first-year leftside from Mill Bay, Rachael Mokosak - three Chargers student-athletes who remained in Victoria over the weekend.

“Our program is deep and getting back to the full squad environment leading up to the playoffs,” said Coach Dahl who joined with Camosun last Fall.

He added, “The Chargers are looking forward to the playoff atmosphere. We've always responded well in big environments. These are the arenas of play where great opportunity presents itself. Our season has been designed with this in mind.”

It took the Camosun College Chargers men’s basketball team two overtimes to clench today’s win over the Langara College Falcons today, making a perfect weekend for the home team and moving the squad another step forward in their push towards the playoffs.

Camosun took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter but made a quick and steady comeback ending the frame 23-21 in their favor. The two teams equaled each other in points in the second quarter with each posting 20 to end the first half 44-41 for the Falcons.

In the third, Camosun outscored the visitors 24-15 and gained back the lead to make it 65-69. In quarter 4, Langara answered back with 21 points over Camosun’s 15 and the 80-all game went into overtime.

In overtime #1, it looked like Camosun had confirmed the “w” scoring 7 unanswered points in the first two minutes. But Langara came back to even things up once again with two solid baskets and a timely tres in the period’s final seconds making it 89-87 in Camosun’s favor. Much to the dismay of a packed home crowd, the Falcons sealed a second overtime opportunity with two fouls shots which were made in the last second of the period.

Overtime #2 saw the two teams go head to head in another intense battle that went to the buzzer. The teams see-sawed until the game reached 101-100 for Langara. With 20 seconds left on the clock, newcomer Jordan Elvedahl acquired four foul shot opportunities, all of which were made to close the contest 104-101 for Camosun.

Second-year forward Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt) led the Chargers for the second time this weekend with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Team mate Blake Mansbridge (3rd year guard from Nanaimo) contributed 26 points while rookie Jordan Pendlebury posted 17 points and 14 rebounds and fellow rookie Jordan Elvedahl put up 14.

Next weekend, the Chargers basketball teams play their final game of the regular season as they host Island Rivals, the VIU Mariners. The Chargers head into the week 8-9.

Despite a slow start in this afternoon’s game against the Langara College Falcons, the Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team earned its second win of the weekend on home turf.

The first quarter started off slowly this afternoon as both teams had trouble finding the basket. Camosun’s Chelsea McMullen put up the first two points at the 7.5 minute mark and after five minutes of play, it was 5-3 for the Chargers. With three minutes left to go, the Falcons offense came to life and the visitors took over the lead to make it 11-9 for Langara.

Chargers newcomer Cassandra Lane (Whitehorse) stepped in with a bucket in the first 30 seconds of the second quarter to tie the game at 11, but Langara pounced back with 11 unanswered points to stretch their lead to 22-11. The final five minutes of the first half were more productive for Camosun who added 13 more points to the cause but Langara maintained the lead, 29-24.

Langara opened the second half with a tres making it 32-24 but Camosun battled to turn the game around and used the third quarter to tie the game up once more (43-all). With less than a minute on the clock, first-year Charger Haley Carmichael (Belmont) put the team ahead with her single from the free throw line and Camosun took over the lead 44-43.

It was Camosun all the way in the fourth with the home team outscoring the visitors 24-14. The 68-57 win gives Camosun a perfect weekend.

First-year wing/point Aija Salvadore (Oak Bay) led the Chargers with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Last night’s win against the Falcons ensured that Camosun would make their fifth consecutive trip to the BCCAA Provincial Championships. This year’s event is hosted by Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, March 3-5.

Next weekend, the Chargers basketball teams play their final games of the regular season as they host Island Rivals, the VIU Mariners.

The Camosun College Chargers men secured a much-needed win tonight against the Langara College Falcons.

As in their past two performances on home ground, the Chargers came out strong in the first two quarters reaching a 13 point lead at the half (37-24). Unlike last weekend’s pair of fourth quarter collapses, the Chargers managed to maintain the lead, completing the third 54-42 and ending the game a solid 14 points ahead of their competitors, 74-60.

Second-year forward Ryan Erikson (Esquimalt) claimed the high mark tonight for his 18 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. Team mate Blake Mansbridge (3rd year guard from Nanaimo) chipped in 15 points while first-year point guard Jordan Elvedahl (Stelly’s) posted 12.

The Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team inked in their 10th win of the season tonight against the visiting Langara College Falcons.

With the exception of tying twice in the second quarter, the Chargers led all the way this evening.

In the first three minutes of the first quarter, a strong Chargers’ defense kept the Falcons at bay while third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen posted 8 solid points before Langara could get on the scoreboard. Six minutes into the game, Camosun was up 13-4, but a determined Falcons squad came back with three consecutive tres to close the gap to 15-13. Chargers rookie Rosie Bergen (Kelowna) made a bucket at the end of the quarter to close it at 19-15.

The two teams tied in points in the second quarter scoring 15 apiece to bring the half to 34-30 for Camosun.

The Chargers pulled ahead in the last half outscoring their opponents 20-13 in the third and 19-12 in the fourth to end the game 73-55.

Chargers third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen (Prince George) led Camosun with 27 points and 5 rebounds.

The Chargers meet the Falcons again tomorrow afternoon. With tonight’s win, the Chargers women head into Saturday’s competition with a record of 10-6.

Chargers MVB Alumnus Mourned

The Camosun College Chargers mourn the loss of men's volleyball alumnus Derek Twomey. Derek, only 21, passed away January 30, 2011. A trust fund has been set up in the Twomey name at the TD Canda Trust Bank in Winnipeg (2030 Corydon Ave). The fund will be put towards a youth volleyball scholarship. The Camosun Chargers would like to express their sincere condolences to the Twomey family during this extremely difficult time.

Despite holding the lead in the first three quarters, the Camosun College Chargers men conceded once again to the UNBC Timberwolves, this time in the final frame, 97-91.

The Chargers managed a two-point lead in the first (27-25) which grew to 12 (55-43) at the end of the second thanks largely to four consecutive three-pointers made by the home team in the last five minutes of the quarter.

Camosun hit its largest lead in the first few minutes of the third where they pulled ahead of UNBC by 17 points (63-46). The Timberwolves outscored Camosun by one (25 to 24) but the Chargers maintained the lead at the end of the quarter 79-68.

Although they were able to maintain the lead for three full quarters, the last five minutes of the fourth proved fatal for Camosun and the home team was outshot by the visitors 12 points to 29, bringing the final score in favor of the T-Wolves, 97-91.

This evening’s loss leaves Camosun with a record of 6-9 with three games to go before the playoffs.

Third-year guard from Nanaimo Blake Mansbridge led the Chargers with 30 points.

The Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team flipped things around this afternoon with a 70-59 win against the UNBC Timberwolves. It was a total turn-around for the home team who lost to their opponents last night 59-77.

Camosun picked up its defense right off the bat permitting only 9 of UNBC’s points to their 15 in the first quarter. The two teams got physical in the second which allowed Camosun to capitalize on seven of their eight foul shots. Three tres (two posted by second-year wing/point Anya Weare and a single by Oak Bay grad and wing/point Aija Salvadore) contributed to the Chargers’ second quarter success and Camosun blasted past the T-Wolves 22-14, ending the half 37-23.

The third was a precarious frame with the T-Wolves cutting into the Chargers defense and outshooting the home team 26-12. Despite moving up to a 20-point lead at the three-minute mark, Camosun fell back as the Wolves gained ground with 20 unanswered points which they accumulated in the last six minutes of the quarter.

Tied at 49-all going into the final frame, Camosun once again capitalized on a bevy of foul shots brought on by a very physical T-Wolves team. Outscoring UNBC 21-10, the Chargers pulled ahead to a 70-59 victory thanks in part to 14 points made from the free throw line.

Third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen drew top honors for the second time this weekend posting an outstanding 31 points and 10 rebounds.

With this afternoon’s win, the Chargers end the weekend with a league record of 9-6.

Next weekend, the Chargers basketball teams are at home and face off against the Langara College Falcons at PISE.

The Camosun College Chargers men were defeated tonight by the #2 ranked UNBC Timberwolves in a fourth quarter collapse, 102-74.

The Chargers played a great first quarter taking the lead 25-21. UNBC came back in the second to outscore Camosun by a slight margin (23-19) and to bring the game to a 44-all tie at the half.

In the third, UNBC pulled ahead running ten straight points past the home team to bring the game to 59-49 before ending the quarter with a 7-point lead (66-59). The Wolves took over in the fourth, outshooting the Chargers 36-15 and chalking up a 28-point victory (102-74).

Third-year guard Blake Mansbridge posted 21 points to earn high score honors for Camosun.

The Chargers meet the Timberwolves again tomorrow afternoon. The Chargers men head into Saturday’s competition 6-8.

The Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team could not seem to find their game, losing tonight’s contest against the UNBC Timberwolves 77-59.

The T-Wolves got out to an early start posting seven points before the Chargers could get onto the scoreboard. Despite taking almost 2.5 minutes to sink their first basket, Camosun made up for lost time by quickly following up with two shots from the field and a three-pointer to tie the game at 9-all with 7 minutes to go. The two teams tied once again at 11-all before the Wolves made their move to shoot ahead and end the first quarter 20-13.

The Timberwolves came out blasting in the second, outshooting the home team 23-12 to end the first half 43-25.

The Chargers made a strong effort to come back in the second half and matched UNBC point for point with each team earning a total of 34, but it was not enough to repair the damage that had been done in the first two frames.

Chargers third-year wing/point Chelsea McMullen (Prince George) led Camosun with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

The Chargers meet the Timberwolves again tomorrow afternoon. With tonight’s loss, the Chargers women head into Saturday’s competition with a 8-6 record.

Chargers and T-Wolves showdown at PISE

Heading into the upcoming weekend with a four-game winning streak, the Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team is preparing for tough set of contests this Friday and Saturday against familiar foes, the UNBC Timberwolves.

Camosun and UNBC have met on a number of occasions, most notably in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 finals of the BCCAA Provincial Championships. UNBC captured the title in 2007-08 (71-54) while Camosun returned to seize the spoils in 2008-09 (77-61).

At last year’s BCCAA Championship, Camosun and UNBC met a third time, but in this instance the two teams went head to head in the semi-finals where Camosun netted the win by one (57-56). The Chargers advanced to their third consecutive BCCAA final but were defeated by the UBC-Okanagan Heat who took the game 69-67, denying the defending Champions of a second consecutive title.

While the Championships provided the two teams with an exciting arena in which to carry out their burgeoning rivalry, it is a new crop of Camosun players who will hit the court this weekend to meet the T-Wolves.

“Most of our team this year has never seen UNBC play,” said Chargers Head Coach Brett Westcott. “What happened in previous years happened with those players and when they left, some of that fire went with them … for both teams."

Although the rivalry between Camosun and UNBC may be a thing of the past, the fifth-ranked Chargers will undoubtedly be working hard to slow down UNBC’s veteran team who is currently sitting only one spot above Camosun in the standings at fourth.

"UNBC is deeper and more experienced than we are with lots of depth in the frontcourt and the backcourt,” commented Coach Westcott. “They really look to run under the leadership of BCCAA Player of the Year Christine Kennedy and they can rack up some big point totals quickly. Their big post players like Erin Beckett and Sarah Moxley rebound well so that allows them to limit other teams second-chance baskets. They are starting to play better now and that is not a good thing for us."

The Chargers men will also have their hands full trying to tame the T-Wolves who are ranked second in the BCCAA standings and seventh nationally. Last year, the Chargers played one of their best games of the season against the Timberwolves who at that time were ranked number two in the country. The Chargers hope to take some of that momentum to the hardwood this weekend.

“It’s pretty simple,” said Chargers Head Coach Craig Price. “We have to score!”
